Album Condition / Vinyl Zustandsbeschreibung
Mint (M)- Absolutely perfect in every way.
- Certainly never been played, possibly even still sealed.
- Should be used sparingly as a grade, If at all.
Near Mint (NM)
- The Record
- May have a couple of spindel marks but not more
- May have a couple of paper scuff but not more.
- A nearly perfect record.
- The record should show no obvious signs of wear.
The Sleeve
- An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like.
- Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap.
EXCELLENT (EX)
The record
- May have more then a few spindel marks
- May have some paper scuffs, rub marks but NO scratches.
- Any blemishes are only cosmetic.
The sleeve
- Cover would show very slight ring-wear, minor denting to a corner.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
The Record
- A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it.
- Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don’t affect one’s listening experiences.
- Slight warps that do not affect the sound are "OK".
- The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable.
- The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.
The Sleeve:
- Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split.
- An LP cover may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole (CO) or Cut Corner (CC) or Punch hole/BB Drill hole.
Very Good (VG)
- The Record
- Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song’s intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise.
- Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
- Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached.
- The Sleeve
- Picture sleeves or LP covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. A small tear from sticker or a seam split along the spines may occurr.
- Usually a cover is VG when one or two of these problems are evident: moderate to strong ring wear, seam splits, bent corners, loss of gloss, stains, H2O etc.
Records lower than VG would be rated as good (G) or Fair (F) however these are offered seldom to none in my shop.
This grading is according to Goldmine Grading standard added with just an extra Condition level called Excellent (EX) which is between VG+ and NM. Other sellers use for EX also VG++
In addition I offer Sealed Copies in my Shop and Auctions, but I am not made responsible for the condition of Vinyl. No Refund on Sealed Items!
Typical Abbreviations used for record collectors/Weitere Abkürzungen der Zustandsbeschreibung für Vinyl und Covern
cc = cut corner ( One corner of the cover of an LP or picture sleeve has a 45-degree corner cut)
co = cut out (If there's a vinyl notch cut into the sleeve, it means that the album didn't sell originally and was returned to the record company. The record company notched it, then sent it out to record stores that sell remaindered items)
Promo = promotional vinyl Copy
sol = Sticker on Label
soc = sticker on cover
woc = writing on cover
wol = writing on label
Drill hole / Punch Hole = besides the CC and CO some record companies also punched their vinyl with the same effect of giving the last Bargain and no return
