Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light to light+, fine and mainly faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Barely even showing with normal viewing, this is a very nice copy and a difficult record that plays very well.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Quite rare like so many on this most collectable of labels. For me, Jade Warrior were one of the best bands on this loss leader label where few albums sold in any great numbers. Quite possibly the most collectable and iconic label ever made, fine copies of most are becoming ever increasingly difficult to find as interest spirals and values soar. Over the years of selling on Ebay, I have had most of the titles, but this one until now has eluded me. And overall, a very fine example not to be missed.

Brief Info: Jade Warrior’s third album for Vertigo which proved to be their last, as they then signed to Island Records. They made very impressive music with plenty of guitar and interesting use of the flute. A mix of quiet and louder music all the three Spiral albums are worthy of investigation, this arguably the best. They received good reviews on issue, but were never very well promoted and sales were modestly low. Hence all three are difficult to find, this being my first ever ‘Last Autumn’s Dream’.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and including the swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Lovely artwork with minimal wear and barely any creasing. Any rubbing very light indeed seen near the extreme edges. A small surface chip near the top left corner with a few gentle surface marks seen under angled light. But little detracts from this splendid front.

Cover Back: A little rubbing on the corner tips and the mildest hint of a gentle rim arc near the top edge. Clearly these very matt gatefolds are always prone to substantial ring wear, and few will ever avoid it. This almost as light as it ever sets and shows little. Barely any creasing and few marks, both front and back will take a fair degree of beating.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside has little to fault, just the merest hint of faint set-off where dark ink rests upon light when close, again almost impossible to avoid. Generally attractive, as is the majority of this scarce cover.

Top Edges: A little patchy rubbing, mostly near the right corners, both straight and close flush.

Bottom Edges: Both have moderate rubbing, or this would have been graded still higher.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is folded and tucked with a real edge, this has a rub near the top and little else. The back entrance edge is clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn, being fine and quite fragile, I can more than imagine most will be worn or eroded. Very little rubbing with most near the ends and gentle traces on the folds. Just enough to remind of age, but again, this fragile area will not prove too easy to find much better..

Corners: All have moderate rubbing with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Still a strong all-round example of this obviously wear-prone and fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Not for the Vertigo specialist or connoisseur, but this attractive item should please many collectors. They do come along too often, so sometimes a little compromise has to be made and this really is nice.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the swirl inner is a little aged with the usual browning of the seam adhesive and some fairly light creasing. These were lined and both window circles are crisp and neat with just the odd tiny nick. All edges unsplit with no repairs, and for an inner over 40 years old, still very respectable.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: again with fine and light surface marks seen under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches, hence no pops or significant clicks throughout. A very fine visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy in terms of age quite modestly played, but like the cover and inner, not pristine for the perfectionist. But still a very solid and attractive example to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive and scarce Vertigo record plays up to and the majority above it’s solid visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are gentle, light and quite infrequent and no pops or major clicks were noted. No pressing flaws or cutting noises, this is a difficult album with some very quiet passages, hence total silence is near impossible on a record this age with the material. But very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Yes the odd gentle reminder you are listening to a 41-year-old vinyl record, and I also remind I play all my records on a Linn LP12, still one of the most revealing front ends ever made. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended to many collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
