THIS IS VERY RARE. now impossible to get hold of! mint new copy! eclipse records
Jack's early music is recognized in the Takoma-inspired tradition of John Fahey, Leo Kottke - here Jack adds his own exotic stylings and a recognizable touch, somewhat related to the whole strain of free, late sixties modally fuelled string music, led in the uk by the likes of Davy Graham, Renbourn & Jansch and a host of less talented imitators. Pieces for 12 & 6 string, and lap guitar build on a pleasing fund of blues, and ragtime dues, into a fully convincing raga manifesto. Even co-opting electronics next to the more traditionally important tabla, adds something to the mesmeric presence of these pieces, beautifully recorded and ready for some quality time. After continued immersion, you almost begin to feel this is the greatest album John Martyn should have made, and coming from me - that's about the highest praise around. Beautiful.
