Another astonishing, unique and exciting session from soundtrack Don, Pino Calvi, who demonstrated his broad talent on several important recordings for film, and especially the Italian TV station RAI. Calvi also gave us some great non commercial Library sets like Realta E' Fantasia on the evergreen and bizarrely still underrated Usignolo label. His most prolific output is of course on his populist Romantic album series for RiFi. Here though he offers the listener his personal rather curious interpretation of the animal world, their behaviours and personalities set to an often groovy, often deeply experimental musical score. Animals offers up some strong soundtrack based rhythmic funk but more importantly will occasionally venture into darker corners of the natural world utilising a broad range of keyboards from Rhodes to Moogs and great use of the spinet on Le Cingaleggre. Apparently Calvi also commissioned a number of associates skilled in their use of hand made electronics to add to these dense and dark musical passages making for an unusually intoxicating blend of raw ethnic stylings and tight Jazz and Pop rhythms. Quite an outstanding session.
