Great title, great cast, GREAT SCORE! Was it a great movie? Well... it was 1968, and the production suffered a number of problems on the road to getting this adaptation of Allistair Maclean's novel made.
It wasn't exactly The Guns of Navarone, although the producers were the same, and had originally cast Gregory Peck and David Niven in the lead roles, but it still turned out to be a guilty pleasure of a cold war submarine thriller, featuring Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine, and Jim Brown.
The music is better than the movie (in my opinion), with Michel Legrand (Wuthering Heights, Le Mans, and The Thomas Crowne Affair) composing. It's pretty indicative of the times, retaining both the soaring optimism of the 1940's and 50's and clashing it against the intense and sometimes other-worldly quality of the 1960's. It makes for great background music, cascading from ephemeral to conspiratorial to generally uplifting.
I heard that Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher, Mission: Impossible Rogue Naiton/ Fallout, Top Gun Maverick) is interested in doing a remake. If he ever gets it off the ground, don't be surprised if you find Tom Cruise taking over the lead, or if you find this CD becoming even more of a collector's item!
