description:
Ultra rare lp privately issued by l'Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) as a document of their ongoing research into electronic sound. All of side 1 is taken up by Exemples Sonores, a beautiful montage of demonstrations of then state-of-the-art synthesis methods, sound experiments, newly invented electronic instruments, digital audio processing techniques, and psychoacoustic phenomenon; there are some extremely unusual sounds which must be heard to be believed including computer-generated and digitally-processed speech and vocal noises, studies in spatial/stereo effects and microtonal scales, and mutated synthetic instruments which morph properties of acoustic instruments to wild effect. Side 2 features 8 excellent and rarely heard experimental electronic compositions by IRCAM residents ranging from purely electronic works to live instrumental pieces incorporating realtime electronic processing realized on IRCAM equipment. Performers include the Ensemble InterContemporain directed by Peter Eotvos as well as Boulez, soprano Jane Manning, contrabassist Barry Guy, engineers/assistants Gyorgy Kurtag, Marc Battier, and Stanley Haynes, and others. Contributors to the Exemples Sonores include most of the other composers on this disc plus Maurice Bejart, Vinko Globokar, Roger Reynolds, Harrison Birtwistle, Jean-Baptiste Barriere, and many others. Includes photocopy of the 8-page insert (not the original insert but a complete reproduction of it), with extensive charts, photos, and notes in French. Overall, a highly recommended sound document.
artist info from album notes etc.:
IRCAM (translation: Institute for music/acoustic research and coordination) was founded in 1969 by Georges Pompidou and Pierre Boulez "to bring science and art together in order to widen instrumentarium and rejuvenate musical language." • Risset is a composer, pianist, and theoretician who studied music under Andre Jolivet and also studied mathematics and physics; he worked at IRCAM with Boulez, at Bell Labs where he met Vladimir Ussachevsky and worked with Edgard Varese, John R. Pierce, James Tenney, and Max Mathews, and as the first computer-based composer at the legendary INA-GRM musique concrete studios (center of study for electroacoustic pioneers like Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Francois Bayle, Michel Chion, Luc Ferrari, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Michel Redolfi, Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Jean Michel Jarre, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis). • Boulez is an influential postwar composer and conductor who worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, and Gyorgi Ligeti, and was a student of Arnold Schoenberg and Olivier Messiaen. • Subotnick is an electronic and multimedia composer who was a pupil of Leon Kirschner and Darius Milhaud, became a master of the Buchla synthesizer, worked with Joan La Barbara, and blazed the same trails as Gottfried Michael Koenig, Bulent Arel, Jon Appleton, John Eaton, Oskar Sala, Terry Riley, Salvatore Martirano, etc; his early experiments with synthesizers foreshadowed the work of electronic musicians such as Autechre and Aphex Twin. • Chowning is a percussionist, composer, and computer music pioneer who studied under Nadia Boulanger. • Machover studied under Elliot Carter and Roger Sessions. • Holler is a German composer and pianist who studied with Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Herbert Eimert, and Aloys Kontarsky, and worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the WDR electronic studio.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective) reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
Payment I accept Paypal (which allows for fastest possible shipment). Please email with any payment questions. If you are paying by Paypal and have won multiple items, please use a single Paypal payment. I will send an eBay invoice to winners shortly after my auctions close, and an email after payment has been received to confirm item shipment.
