Although Interpol have made remarks in interviews regarding their supposedly more happy-go-lucky demeanour in recent times, long-term fans of the band will be very happy to hear that El Pintor would suggest nothing of the kind is afoot. Indeed, this fifth album is as sepulchral as anything the band have done before. Yet after all, nobody does melancholia quite like this stylishly attired three-piece, who here summon up the widescreen sweep and nocturnal melodies of their game-changing 'Turn On The Bright Lights' whilst also adding a surfeit of new touches, with a falsetto joining Paul Banks' trademark lugubrious baritone in his vocal arsenal and walls of guitars coalescing into a glorious dream pop assault. A powerful new chapter from the all-powerful emperors of gloom.
