Label/Format/Condition: RCA Neon – Two STUNNING examples of what has to be one of the loveliest label designs ever. Such a shame it is seen so infrequently as only a tiny few albums were ever issued on it – most being rare to very rare. These both look as new – a bold statement I know – but true. Ultra clean, fresh with gorgeous shine and colour, they have a very gently textured surface with deep coated glossy surfaces. I cannot see any spindle marks at all. To cap off what is a superb record, it plays beautifully throughout, that as collectors will know is some achievement. Neon records were pressed with very fine and quite shallow grooves, thus they mark so easily and often were less than wonderfully pressed. This record does come as close to reminding of new as they get, and for fans and label collectors, this could prove the ultimate upgrade.

Rarity: Quite rare: with just 11 albums issued on this briefly available label, all titles sold poorly, some badly. It can be argued with was one of the more ‘successful’ titles on Neon, but it still elusive and very hard to find in top condition.

Brief Info: The third in a series of 11 titles on the beautiful Neon label design. Indian Summer were a British band from Coventry, this was their only album. They played progressive rock with emphasis on keyboards. They had their own quite unique sound and with better promotion they should have done well within this field. But this, and other albums on Neon (and some even on RCA) were so badly promoted, they were simply left out to dry, ignored and disappeared. Neon has to be one of the loveliest labels ever put on a vinyl record, such a shame it disappeared quickly, but with such poor sales, it was predictable. Also a same Neon records were often badly pressed, the grooves on all the titles I have seen have been compact and shallow. They mark easily and the volume is lower than most standard records. But this copy excels, not only does it appear hardly even played, it IS very well pressed with no sound issues. Hardly blemished at all and finding a better copy will prove near impossible. The wear-prone cover, apart from the usual storage edge rubbing, has little other wear. So for collectors of more obscure prog and rarer labels, this is a beauty, the record especially could prove a massive upgrade for discerning collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this I feel deserves at least one (+). An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Includes the original Neon label polylined black inner sleeve that is quite distinctive and cannot be substituted without be obvious.

Cover Front: This cover is very prone to wear, this has little on the really important areas including this lovely clean looking front. Just a small dull mark on the right which is a mere adhesive smear from manufacture, it shows little and has nothing to do with wear. Tiny tip rubs but little else in that respect, the lack of creasing is another major plus. Just a gentle hint of a wave, that is quite common on covers with thick spines that invariably inside have ‘secondary’ creases near the hinge, so that is somewhat of a natural trait, here only quite minor anyway. With no sticker marks or issues and deep fresh colour retained with no fading, this will take some beating.

Cover Back: Very impressive and arguably even better, the lack of ringwear a massive bonus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: An aforementioned secondary light semi-crease to the right of the central fold hinge, these naturally occur on thicker spine covers and avoidance is hardly an option. Nothing else really to fault, if indeed this is a fault anyway.

Top Edges: Thick and straight and near parallel. Any rubbing is very little and equally patchy, hardly any really except a small one near the right corner tip of the front.

Bottom Edges: Quite light patchy rubbing on the front, the back more moderate and less patchy. Storage edges obviously are more prone to this, but this wear only really shows viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight with minimal compression and folded close to square, so the edges meet up closely together and near parallel. Quite a crucial factor on these thicker more solidly constructed covers. All text is perfect and unworn, just a little rubbing near the very ends and even the folds have virtually all ink retained.

Corners: Some quite light tip rubbing with mainly very fine shape retained and no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving and wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive and still fresh item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a superb example of this stylish black polylined inner. These have a two line Patent number on the left and ‘MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN; on the right near the bottom back edge. This one almost like new with little creasing, two crisp neat window circles and clear, fresh lining. No edge splits or repairs, original inners like this are great indicators of the record inside – and I was not disappointed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better. A super visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks tiny, very light and ultra faint as seen directly under bright angled light. Critically viewed, a hint of dulling mainly on the run outs, probably from the polylining of the inner which I doubt if it has left for decades. This has to be a contender for the very best Neon album I have seen, I know for a fact, these fine compact, quite shallow grooves mark so easily, well the have survived in near exceptional condition. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors. A likely major upgrade for someone?

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive and scarce album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a good dynamic range and very detailed sound. The recording volume typically lower than average records, but that is a pure trait of this label and totally normal, simply turn it up. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, barely anything on this most difficult of labels, and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will match, let outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Hardly even run-in vinyl terms. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
