By 1959, tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec was a long forgotten swing musician. That year, he reunited with Blue Note Records where he's had some hits in the mid '40s. The aptly titled "Heavy Soul", his comeback album, proved a revelation to the jazz world. His big, vibrant tone, bluesy phrasing and magnificent heart-on-sleeve ballad work on this album secured his rightful place in jazz history. Among the gems on this album are "Acquitted", "The Man I Love" and a powerful "Nature Boy" performed by just Quebec and bassist Milt Hinton.

Heavy Soul lives up to its title. But this album is not heavy on up-tempo soul jazz, instead it's heavy on soulful ballads. There are some faster numbers, the Quebec penned "Acquited" and "Que's Dilemma," but it is the slower, sultry standards that set this disc's romantic tone. While I'm generally not a jazz organ fan (unless it's Larry Young or Jimmy Smith), Freddie Roach's playing is refreshingly light, and is spacious enough to allow bassist Milt Hinton room to make his own contributions. (If you look carefully most jazz albums with organ don't use bassists because the sound would get too muddy at the low-end.)

Quebec's tone and breathing make his playing very distinctive and it's heard to great effect on this album where the group also allow him space to express himself. Listeners looking for a place to start might listen to the reading of "Nature Boy" where he's accompanied only by Milt Hinton on bass. Of the up tempo tracks 'Acquitted' and the bonus track 'Blues for Ike' are a great showcase for the ensemble, with Roach in particular knowing when to sit back, and when to insinuate himself into the mix.Of the slower track the two outstanding ones for me are 'The Man I love' and "Just one more chance" both of which also show the understanding between Hinton and Quebec, both of whom had served time with the Cab Calloway Band.Al Harewood who plays drums throughout can be propelling when needed, but he also sits in well on the slower numbers.

This album is proof that Quebec was about to move back to successfully resume a career that had previously been badly affected by his narcotic intake. He'd already appeared on sessions by Jimmy Smith. Duke Pearson & Sonny Clarke in the early 60's and "Heavy Soul" was the first of four albums under his own name, that he was to produce for Blue Note before his untimely death in early 1963.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.

(b)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams and opening side

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the back panel

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
