THE IDLE RACE

BIRTHDAY PARTY

Year of Release: 1968

Catalogue number LBS 83132

First press Matrix Nos: LBS 83132 A#1 & LBS 83123 B#1 .

The producers : Gerald Chevin, Edward Offord & The Idle Race

Classic first STEREO album on the blue Liberty record label. This is the amongst the most sought after by collectors want and is regarded as a mini-classic blending whimsy with progressive elements. This very heavy pressing on the original labels is one of the earliest ever made and it plays beautifully. With just a tiny few ultra faint surface blemishes on the record., it has faired well for its considerable vintage, all evidence strongly suggests very few plays. The flimsy lightweight cover has also survived the years well.

Cover Grade : VG+ still highly attractive. A gatefold front & back laminated sleeve made with very thin and soft card, this bends easily and should not be held on any single corner.

Lamination – : The laminate retains shine and clarity with the odd wrinkle mainly on the reverse. There is no rim wear which is amazing with a 160 gram record inside for well over 40 years. The most significant blemish is some very small writing on the inside of the gatefold (see photo)
Top Edge: Minimal wear.l

Bottom Edge: Minimal wear.
Opening: Quite sharp with no wear and minimal feathering.
Spine and Text: Incredibly thin again, compressed or not, not sure. As solid and straight as could be expected. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid laminate.
Corners: The corners are neat with some wear.
Cover Summary: A pretty good example of a 40 year old sleeve as noted above. This still looks attractive with any flaws or wear average, it should please many collectors but not the perfectionists of course. Do not underestimate just how delicate, light and flimsy this highly damage-prone cover is, made even more so with a very heavy record inside.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VG+ scuffs/hairlines that do not affect playback. Fnding a genuine first pressed copy of this elusive Liberty classic will prove hard.
Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful record plays with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. These vintage albums rarely escape a few faint surface blemishes or hairlines and this example sets the bar high. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. If the quality of the sound and music is a priority over minor cover and visual surface blemishes, this could be the copy you have been waiting for.
