This is the Chess 1434 Mono Lp album which I believe is the 1st copy of this record to be done by Chess in 1958. It has a black label with silver printing. It is a highly collectible copy and is a must for the discerning blues lp collector.

This is a very nice album with an excellent condition cover. The cover has no splits, holes, bends, etc. and the spine is perfect with all writing intact. There are 2 spots on the front where sales labels were, that show some sticker residue and there is a small star on the back next to "Smokestack Lightnin". There is little to no ring wear on the front and minor on the back. The cover is whiter on the back than the way my photos show. It's hard to find a better cover.

The record itself has a small "bubble" just about 1/4" in from the edge which must be a factory thing. You can see it in my last photo. I have played the record and there are the following observations:

There are no scratches that would affect play. Other than needing a possible cleaning it is very nice looking.

Side 1 - It does not skip on my turntable, but there is a thumping sound where the bump is. This lasts through the intro of "Moanin' At Midnight" which is the 1st cut during the "moaning and humming" and the guitar and harp. It ends after the 1st two singing lines. After that there are some faint occasional crackles but the rest of the side sounds really very clear through my Bose speakers.

Side 2 - The record is skipping on the bump the 1st 1/4" of the 1st song, "Evil". After that it is fine with some typical sporadic crackles.

My photos show some spotting on the labels, but this is not very noticeable in reality. It must be the camera flash making it show up more.

I am not a record grader so I hope this helps describe the playability well!
