Howard Seratt Sun # 198 78 RPM Record - Pre Release Sample - Metal Acetate

This is one of the few Gospel Records that Sam Phillips released.

This record was in the collection of Country Star Little Jimmy Dickens. We assume the record was probably given to Jimmy at some point by Howard Seratt.

A nice example of an early, scarce Sun Pre Release Sample. record. This was recorded at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee by Sam Phillips, probably in early 1954.

 Howard toured with Sun recording artists Jim Ed Brown & The Brown Sisters (Maxine and Bonnie) and Slim Rhodes on package shows put together by Sam Philips. In 1954 and '55 he appeared several times on the "Ozark Jubilee" with Red Foley, who was the host of the show broadcast on KWTO-TV in Springfield, Missouri. Previously, Foley had been Master of Ceremonies at the Grand Old Opry beginning in spring 1946. When he had heard Howard's "Troublesome Waters" he asked Howard to come and sing at the Opry, an opportunity which Howard declined. Foley extended an unprecedented invitation to Howard; "You are welcome on any stage or any show I am on anywhere, anytime!" Which was an offer Howard never took him up on. In later years he turned down many more offers to play the Opry. Sam Phillips would have liked to continue recording Seratt, but he refused to perform anything other than Gospel.

Record plays Very well on both sides. Nice labels with yellowing, spotting and staining. Some flaking on one side, as pictured.. Some surface noise, typical of all Sun issued records. Some light scratches, scuffs, etc. A fine example, and a great addition for a Sun collection. A solid VG + in 45 terms. A must have for the Sun Records completist!
