Henry James – ‘Vank Out’ / ‘Version’ – Jah Man (JA)

A rare roots tune of the highest order, this is Peter Broggs’s first disc, recorded under his own name, Henry James! The Jamaican patois of the refrain, “If you don’t love Jah, you really got to vank out”, roughly translates as “If you don’t love Jah, you really got to push off”. Recorded at Channel One, the tune allegedly features “Bingy” Bunny and “Flabba” Holt of the Roots Radics on rhythm guitar and bass, respectively. Very scarce in any condition, this is a true collector’s item, don’t miss it!

Condition: The A-side plays VG+ or perhaps a notch better. The B-side has remnants of, of all things, candle wax, which cause some noise. There may be a way of removing the wax completely, but I haven’t attempted it. I’ve played the record three or four times, and it seems the wax disappears little by little each time the stylus “digs” into grooves. I’ve included a full clip of the version side; it isn’t too bad. And the A-side sounds great (please listen to the clips). Slightly worn, slightly smudged labels; both sides have a record shop stamp (please see scans).
