Description

(Hear) 1977 Manzel Multi-Sampled Funk 45 (Space Funk / Jump Street)

Manzel – “Space Funk” b/w “Jump Street” (Fraternity 3401). Great 1977 release on the small Cincinnati label by this instrumental funk band from Lexington, Kentucky, which formed in 1973 and disbanded in 1978. They consisted of Manzel Bush (keyboards), John L. Van Dyke (guitar) and Steve Garner (drums). In 1976, they recorded some sessions at Counterpart Creative Studios in Cincinnati, Ohio, which resulted in the songs "Space Funk," "Jump Street," "Midnight Theme," and "Sugar Dreams." While very obscure, Manzel have been widely sampled by hip hop musicians, including De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Ghostface Killah, Eric B. & Rakim and Ultramagnetic MCs. "Space Funk" was also sampled by Grandmaster Flash in the late 1970s as well as Childish Gambino, Eric B. & Rakim, and D.O.C. 'Space Funk' is a fore runner for nu-beat/broken beat with a regular funk break but the bass twisted and heavy psych, “Midnight Theme” has a tight open break at the start, which you might recognize from Cypress Hill's 'How I Could Just Kill A Man.' Take a listen to a little of each side. Record is in strong VG+ to M- condition. Postage will be paid by purchaser.
