Harry Whitaker - "Black Rennaisance" - Baystate RVJ-6006. Condition of Record: VG- Record plays with background noise during the intros to both tracks, as well as the quiet passages of the title track.  That noted, the majority of each side plays VG+, and overall the record is an enjoyable listen. I have recorded both sides of the LP, provided on the link below, so that you can judge the grade with your own ears. Condition of Cover: The original cover is absent. With great help from my friend Michael, who is a brilliant technician, we painstakingly made a copy / fascimile: "paste-on" in style, printing on a high quality sticker-backed rag weave paper, and applying it to a black vintage flat-spine sleeve (the spine is blank). It looks really good and I'm really pleased with how it turned out (see the photos).

This is the first issue on Baystate of which there were only 500 copies made.  The record is a blistering soul jazz masterpiece, the culmination of efforts from Roy Ayer's arranger and right hand man. Truly one of the pinnacles of late 70s music in America. I recall Gilles Peterson mentioning that it ranks amongst his top five favourite albums of all time. The master tapes for this one were lost in a fire, and the contemporary reissues were made from needle drops of an original copy, which unfortunately were crudely mastered and sound quite terrible. Even with the background noise this original copy plays with, it sounds many times better than the reissues (I've compared both).  As mentioned, I recorded the full album so that you can hear the issues for yourself:
