Sought-after audiophile SQ Quadraphonic issue (stereo compatible) of these exquisite works performed by Partch and his ensemble on his unique microtonal instrument/sound sculptures. The conductor is Danlee Mitchell and the ensemble features jazz vibist Emil Richards and avant-improv percussionist Michael Ranta. Includes 2 percussive instrumental works and 1 piece with vocals drawn from hitchhiker graffiti, using instruments like surrogate kithara, harmonic canon, diamond marimba, cloud chamber bowls, chromelodeon, and adapted guitar, all tuned to Partch's 43-tone scale.

artist info from album notes etc.:
From the late 1930s onward, after living as a transient hobo, Partch developed instruments based on his own revolutionary just intonation tuning theories (considered the first in the field since Pythagoras). He composed in isolation within the musical universe he created, but he blazed the same trails as Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, and Charles Ives, drew from percussive eastern music such as gamelan, American folk, Native American, and African music, Hebrew and Christian hymns, and "lumber yards and junk shops," and would become influential to John Cage, Steve Reich, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, John Eaton, James Tenney, Rhys Chatham, Tony Conrad, Henk Badings, and others from the avant garde; his instruments relate to the 'Structures Sonores' of Bernard and Francois Baschet and Jacques Lasry and the sound sculptures and homemade instruments of Harry Bertoia, Max Neuhaus, Z'ev, Donald Knaack, Paul Panhuysen, Mario Bertoncini, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rutman, and Bill Fontana. Michael Ranta is an American percussionist and composer who was a member of the live electronic free improv group Wired along with krautrock legend Conny Plank; he appeared on several landmark Gate 5 recordings performing on Harry Partch's unique microtonal instruments, collaborated with Fluxus composers Toshi Ichiyanagi and Takehisa Kosugi, created early electronic music at the NHK Tokyo studios (alongside Yuji Takahashi, Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Makoto Moroi), worked with Joseph Anton Riedl, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Herbert Brun, Jean-Claude Eloy, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and was influential to Nurse With Wound/NWW. Emil Richards was a member of the Harry Partch Ensemble, the George Shearing Quintet, and Stan Kenton's Neophonic Orchestra, and has worked in classical and jazz settings with Charles Mingus, Jimmy Witherspoon, Shorty Rogers, Don Ellis, Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Henry Mancini, Lalo Schifrin, and many others as a studio musician.
