Description
For sale here is a very scarce and highly sought after original US Blue Note pressing of Hank Mobley’s Roll Call.
6 tracks of quality hard bop jazz, featuring Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Freddie Hubbart on trumpet, Wynton Kelly on Piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Blakey on drums.
Copies for sale on this and other sites regular get into the three figure bracket.
The album has been re-issued since 1960 across all formats, vinyl editions coming notably in 1962 and 1977.
Original releases, to my knowledge were limited to the US and the U.K.
This copy has some condition issues, so please read carefully - but I think my prices reflect this.

Also, in the dead wax run-out: on both sides. there are the stamped letters - RVG as well as the “ear” symbol and what I understand are the stamper marks “9M” (or “W6” if read upside down)

Vinyl: VG+ (visual) Ex (Audio). One of those rare items where it genuinely plays better than it looks.
Obviously handled and played, it’s a nice clean copy for its 58 years of age. There are some clear and obvious surface marks which don’t show up too well on the photos, however I have play-tested it in full and the reproduction is fantastic! There is a little understandable crackle and hiss on the run-ins and the dead-wax between tracks, but any minor flaws are almost entirely lost behind the audio, with very little, if any, bleeding through. It really is a super audio. It plays through completely without any jumps, scratches or skips.
The labels are nice and clean, in the original 1960 blue & white Blue Note company design. Label text and micro groove legend appear in blue, Blue Note brand name appears in white. Light evidence of spindle-wear.
Sleeve: Good (At Best). Normally avoid listing any items with sleeves below VG standard, but this is a serious rarity and the vinyl sounds so good that I make a rare exception.
The sleeve is a heavy card with a laminated front. Pink tinted photo of Hank Mobley on front cover. Rear cover is unlaminated, Plain white with extensive sleeve notes from Robert Levin. There are also thumbnail adverts for four other Mobley Blue Note albums.
The sleeve is structurally sound, but the rear cover has significant stains/signs of moisture damage.
It also comes complete with the original Blue Note liner, which carries more thumbnail album covers (72) advertising other records from the Blue Note stable. This liner has some seam splits.
So there it is, a genuine collectors item. Some aesthetic condition issues, but sounding really good.
I know the big-bucks are reserved for those in better shape than this, but it’s a good honest copy and I offer it an attractive start-price with no hidden reserves. Happy to ship anywhere but GSP applies to overseas.
