I have to admit that this record has been eluding my grasp for decades. Only recently did I find this copy in a local record store. My first knowledge of the Hackamore Brick came from my early '80s reading of Robert Christgaus's Record Guide: Records of The Seventies. He only gave it a "B" grade but because he suggested a stylistic kinship between this group and The Velvet Underground I immediately made it one of the records I just had to have. Along with The Dream Syndicate and The Bizarros, and the legions of Velvets influenced records produced since the seventies, I had to hear more of that Velvet's sound wherever I could find it. I wasn't disappointed upon listening to the record after all these years though I may have been back then. I have broader tastes/different expectations now and this record is great no matter what associations to other sounds a listener may make. My finding this is nothing earthshaking but it took so long; something inside is finally satisfied.



One Kiss Leads to Another [Kama Sutra, 1970]
This audition tape by the Venus in Furs Society--a record collectors club whose firsthand contact with "decadence" consists of one DMT experience and moderate quantities of oral sex--bears a spooky resemblance to The Velvet Underground (LP number three, the lyrical one). Chick Newman's sour pitch has the deadpan emotional resonance of Lou Reed's, only folkier and more sanguine. The flat, droning beat is pure Maureen Tucker. And the organ solos are obviously an hommage to John Payne of the Serpent Power. B
