·      HOWLIN' WOLF -  SIX SELECTIONS (HALF OF THE PROGRAM) FROM HE SAME-TITLED CHESS ALBUM (“HOWLIN’ WOLF”), AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS “ROCKIN’ CHAIR ALBUM”

·      INSANELY RARE ORIGINAL 1963 CHESS RECORDS TRUE STEREO (!) "LITTLE LP" (JUKEBOX LP) WITH ABRIDGED PROGRAM OF SIX TRACKS

·      ORIGINAL CHESS STEREO "LITTLE" LP 7-LPS-1469 (THE 'DISCOGS' WEB SITE CLAIMS THAT THIS JUKEBOX EP/MINI LP WAS RELEASED IN 1963, BUT WE BELIEVE IT WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED MUCH EARLIER, POSSIBLY AS EARLY AS 1960).

ONE OF THE GREATEST BLUES ALBUMS OF ALL TIME (IF NOT THE GREATEST!) AND DEFINITELY, POSITIVELY THE GREATEST CHICAGO BLUES ALBUM EVER!!! NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTS!

·      ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·      This 33 1/3 rpm 7" release was made for the jukebox market and included at least two 2" x 2" jukebox inserts as well as a strip of blue Seeburg title strips and a strip of white generic title strips (see images). We have here 1 complete set (5 pieces) of unperforated Seeburg titles strips and one (1)  2" jukebox insert. No generic white title strips included.

·      INSANELY RARE TRUE STEREO ANALOG PRESSING OF THESE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT CHESS BLUES SIDES WHICH PROFOUNDLY INFLUENCED A WHOLE GENERATION OF (MOSTLY WHITE) '60s BLUES REVIVAL ARTISTS: JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW RIDICULOUSLY RARE THESE STEREO MIXES ARE: THE TRUE STEREO MIXES WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS FOLLOWING THE ORIGINAL ALBUM RELEASE (THEY WERE FINALLY ISSUED BY MCA/CHESS LABEL IN 1987), AND EVEN THEN ONLY IN THE LOUSY, PREHISTORIC 16-BIT DIGITALLY REMASTERED EDITION (YIKES!). YOU WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER FIND ORIGINAL TRUE STEREO ANALOGUE VERSIONS OF THESE TITLES ANYWHERE!  YOU CAN FIND DIGITAL STEREO VERSIONS OR ANALOGUE MONO VERSIONS, BUT NOT ANALOGUE STEREO VERSIONS. ASIDE FROM THIS MONUMENTALLY RARE CHESS JUKEBOX EP, THEY SIMPLY DO NOT EXIST!!!

·      HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THESE ANALOGUE STEREO MIXES EVEN EXIST IS ANYONE'S GUESS. IN 1960 WHEN THE 'ROCKIN' CHAIR' ALBUM WAS RELEASED, CHESS/ARGO FAMILY OF LABELS HAD JUST ACQUIRED THE MULTITRACK RECORDING EQUIPMENT AND HAD ISSUED, AT THAT POINT, ONLY A HANDFUL OF JAZZ TITLES IN TRUE STEREO; WORLDWIDE, IN 1960, THERE WERE ONLY TWO OR THREE BLUES TITLES AVAILABLE IN TRUE STEREO (VIRTUALY ALL ON VEE JAY LABEL) AND THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN AUDIENCE, WHICH WAS THE PRINCIPAL MARKETING TARGET OF THE CHESS LABEL, WAS NOT KNOWN FOR ITS STEREO BUYING PREFERENCES. WE BELIEVE THAT THIS STEREO RELEASE WAS A RESULT OF THE PARTICULARLY SERENDIPITOUS SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES. NAMELY, A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE RELEASE OF THE 'ROCKIN' CHAIR' ALBUM, THE SEEBURG CORPORATION (THE MAIN MANUFACTURER AND SUPPLIER OF THE JUKEBOX MACHINES TO THE U.S. MARKET) CAME UP WITH THEIR ONE AND ONLY STEREO MODEL (MODEL 222, ALSO AFFECTIONATELY KNOWN AS "THE CHANNEL"), CAPABLE OF PLAYING STEREO DISCS (PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHED IMAGE), SO THE SEEBURG CORPORATION PROBABLY WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE TITLES THEY WERE COMMISSIONING FROM THE RECORDING LABELS - SUCH AS THIS ONE - WERE COMPLIANT WITH THEIR NEW STEREO MODEL. CHALK ONE UP FOR THE PROPHETIC VISION OF THE SEEBURG CORPORATION, FOR, WITHOUT THEM, NONE OF US WOULD EVER KNOW HOW THE ORIGINAL ANALOGUE STEREO MIXES OF THESE CLASSIC CHICAGO BLUES TRACKS ACTUALLY SOUNDED LIKE.

·      RCA VICTOR CUSTOM PRESSING; UNKNOWN PRESSING PLANT.

·      ORIGINAL DARK BLUE JUKEBOX CHESS LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT

·      INCLUDES 1 (ONE) 2 X 2" JUKEBOX  MINI-STICKER / THUMBNAILED PHOTO WITH ORIGINAL COVER ARTWORK , AS SHOWN ABOVE

·      ALSO INCLUDES A FULL SET OF 5 (FIVE) UNSEPARATED, UNDETTACHED PLASTIC (NOT PAPER!) JUKEBOX TITLE STRIPS  WITH ALL 6 SONG TITLES

·      THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·      ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·      CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·      MATRIX NUMBER IN TRAIL-OFF VINYL (DEAD WAX) ENDS WITH '-1S/-2S'.  ON SOME LABELS,  SUFFIX '–1' DENOTES THE VERY FIRST, ORIGINAL PRESSING)

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you’ll get.  GUARANTEED!)

Nothing more, nothing less, than one of two or three most important modern blues albums, PERIOD!  The list of people who covered these immortal blues tunes reads like a who’s-who of Rock, Soul and Blues - EVERYBODY FROM THE DOORS TO LED ZEPPELIN AND FROM  ALLMAN BROTHERS, TO FLEETWOOD MAC, ROLLING STONES, JOHNNY WINTER, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, JEFF BECK, GRATEFUL DEAD AND THEIR MOTHER, FATHER, UNCLE AND FIRST COUSIN COVERED THESE GROUND-BREAKING, TIMELESS, CHICAGO BLUES TUNES. If there is a tune on this album that hasn’t been covered by some major Blues or Rock artist, we are not aware of it. When you think of Chicago Blues, THIS  is what you have in mind: the Rockin’ Chair album – the Heart & Soul of Chicago Blues.

***

Howlin' Wolf's second album brings together some of the blues great's best singles from the late '50s and early '60s.  The so-called Rockin' Chair Album represents the cream of Wolf's Chicago blues work. Those tracks afforded classic status are many, including "Spoonful," "The Red Rooster," "Wang Dang Doodle," "Back Door Man," "Shake for Me," and "Who's Been Talking?" Also featuring the fine work of Chess house producer and bassist Willie Dixon and guitarist Hubert Sumlin, Rockin' Chair qualifies as one of pinnacles of early electric blues, and is an essential album for any quality blues collection.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY STEPHEN COOK, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

The so-called "LITTLE" (or Juke Box) LPs ARE NOT to be confused with regular 7-inch, 4-track EPs which were widely commercially available. The 7-inch LITTLE LPs were made EXCLUSIVELY for use in Jukebox machines and were usually accompanied by the set of 4- or 6 jukebox labels (usually, but not always, replicating the original cover artwork). The LITTLE LPs were NEVER commercially available in any way, manner or form, and are usually NOT listed as a separate category in the record collecting price books and directories.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The album comes with BOTH original set of 5 plastic jukebox strips AND mini-album artwork sticker

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·      THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.   (nothing significant)

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (just a beginning of the split seam)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
