Something of a Holy Grail in the Soul canon, and rightfully so.

The Georgia-bred Howard Tate possessed a huge set of pipes; a blues-drenched, howling, crackeling voice possible of reaching a dizzying falsetto, that today is regarded as one of the finest in the genre by connaisseurs and long-time admireres alike.

Howard Tate was brought to the Verve label by R&B composer, writer and arranger extraordinaire Jerry Ragovoy in 1965, and the duo hit home the first time around with the jaunty, deliciously funky "Ain't Nobody Home", a Top 20 R&B hit and this LP's apt opener. The horns, churchy, groovy organ and fatback beat create a ridiculously funky setting for Tate to wail over. In 1971, blues titan B.B. King would cover it for his 'In London' disc.

Clay Hammond's "Part-Time Love" was a staple of the soul man's diet, and Tate's execution of this 'evergreen' is steeped in the deepest blues tradition. Equally capable of churning out a Redding-styled vocal attack, Tate romps through the busy, fast paced, sassy "Glad I Knew Better" before slipping right back in a blues bag with the legendary "How Blue Can You Get", a deep slice of electrified country blues that B.B. King would use for his live gigs for years. The guitar work on Tate's version is equally spirited, mind you.

The title-track naturally was popularized by blues shouter Janis Joplin, but Tate's original is the real deal; a mixture of blues shouting and soulful crooning over a lamenting, sparsely arranged groove. It all builds up to a dramatic finale richly draped in mourning horns.

Much more upbeat is the bootie shaker "Baby, I Love You", complete with fonkey Stax-esque stops and starts and some in-the-pocket-gutbucket drumming. Again, the horns really finalize the track.

Tate does his grittiest of wailing, most desperate of pleading on the deep soul ballad "I've Learned It All the Hard Way", a goosebump inducing gem that perfectly showcases Tate's remarkable falsetto. More gorgeous horn arrangements and a great minor-keyed bridge that really creates a moody, lost and dark vibe.

Memphis Slim's peerless "Everyday I Have the Blues" is juiced up considerably here, as Tate turns it into a funk vamp that rides a hard rockin' groove. Shamefully short, the tune clocks in at under the two minute mark...

And then there's the hilarious, cheeky uptempo blues stomp of "How Come My Bulldog Don't Bark", an incisive piece of sweaty, down home soul belting on par with Otis Redding and Carla Thomas' "Tramp" and Joe Tex' "Papa Was Too". Good-natured humour continues on the funky "Look at Granny Run Run", with more chanking guitars and blaring horns on the break as a floorshakin' tambourine-heavy rhythm struts on and on and on...

Superb piece of blues-infused funky soul.

What else can we say about this great, legendary, Jerry Ragovoy-produced soul-blues classic that hasn't been said before;an album Jerry Ragovoy himself considered his finest achievement. Not much, except to note, maybe, that at one point or another everybody and their uncle covered the great tunes penned by Jerry Ragovoy and included in this album (including Janis Joplin - another Jerry Ragovoy protégé - who did a great version of the title track on "Pearl", her final album). Truly and genuinely a classic, if ever we've met one.

·                          THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-       Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (covering about 15% of the back panel)

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-       Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the top and bottom seam

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-       Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-       Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam and spine

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the top seam (nothing significant)
