The Rounders started out in the same early-'60s New York folk and jug scene as Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, and had crossed paths numerous times. Stampfel and Weber will be eternally remembered for "Bird Song," which was prominently featured in both the movie Easy Rider and its soundtrack. It's also the opening cut on The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders, an album way beyond anything else considered to be "far out" at the time. Released in 1968 on Elektra, the 13 tracks are highlighted by such otherworldly compositions as "Werewolf," "My Mind Capsized," "The STP Song," and "Half a Mind." Unabashed in its own eccentricity, this set is similar to their 1967 ESP release Indian War Whoop in that it combines acoustic traditional American folk, blues, and hillbilly music regurgitated by crazed folkie acidheads experimenting with electric instruments. Following the disc's release, Stampfel said this album reflected producer Frazier Mohawk's musical taste more so than the band's. The Modal duo are assisted, in this case, by playwright Sam Shepard on tambourine, Richard Tyler on piano, and John Wesley Annis on bass and drums." Songs:BIRD SONG - ONE WILL DO FOR NOW - TAKE-OFF ARTIST SONG - WEREWOLF - INTERLUDE - DAME FORTUNE - MOBILE LINE - THE DUJI SONG - MY MIND CAPSIZED - THE STP SONG - INTERLUDE 2 - HALF A MIND - THE PLEDGE           NO RESERVE!

Grading

MINT * Perfect record, clean gloss, no marks. A mint record is uncommon.

M- * Very clean only a few light marks; plays very well.
M- * Album cover - Near perfect with only minor signs of wear. There should be no ring wear.

VG++ * Surface marks, no scratches, should play and look very good with faint, if any, audible surface noise.
VG++ * Album cover - Some minor ring wear, but  should be in good condition overall.  Also, there can be some minor creases in the corners but no splits in seams.

VG+ * The record shows signs of use, but plays well despite quite visible surface marks and possibly some light scratches. This grading is often used for records which have not been cared for perfectly but still play well overall. A few very faint clicks may be allowed, and will be included in the description.
VG+ * Album cover - May have corners that may be slightly bent, but not broken. There may be wear to the seams but no tears or holes.

VG * Still a nice record, looks used, light scratches, no gouges, still plays fairly well. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music.
VG * Album cover - There may be seam splitting, but not complete separation of the sleeve panels from each other. There will be noticeable ring wear on the cover, but the cover should for the most part be in good condition.
