Description
This is a fine original U.S. pressing copy of the third LP by folk music's merry pranksters the Holy Modal Rounders, released in 1967. After two LPs of left-field takes on traditional songs on the Prestige label, the acoustic folk duo of Pete Stampfel and Steve Weber joined the Fugs for the latter's debut LP (where Weber's "Boobs a Lot" was first committed to vinyl). By 1967, they were on their own again, and produced this period classic. In musical terms, the record is a good-timey mess: like the debut LP by ESP label mates the Godz, the music sounds largely improvised on the spot, though most of the material was again traditional songs. Weber's tale of Jimmy and Crash, snippets of which link the songs on side 1, though, is good drug-addled fun, and the participation of playwright Sam Shepard on drums adds a bit of historical interest to the proceedings. The following year, Stampfel would assume more control over things for their best post-Prestige era LP, The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders. The jacket is close to M- with light creasing and wear in the bottom corners (EX+). The disc is clean with a little light scraping, and plays with some light surface noise (EX).
I’m in the process of selling off a large personal collection amassed over two decades. All discs have been stored in plastic lined inner sleeves separate from their jackets. The jackets have been stored in plastic sleeves. I have play graded (spot checked) discs except where otherwise noted.
