Cult British psych-folk serenader Hitchcock has a career stretching over thirty-five years, from his days in The Soft Boys to his manifold solo triumphs, of which this is his twentieth. It's also arguably his finest to date, catalysed by the input of producer Joe Boyd. Boyd, whose influence on the likes of Nick Drake and The Incredible String Band helped make him a legend, encouraged Hitchcock to take a 'Judy Collins' approach, mixing covers of favourite songs with originals, and the result is a reflective, sensitively arranged and wonderfully autumnal effort, with ditties like Roxy Music's "To Turn You On" and The Doors' "The Crystal Ship" resonating as plaintively as his characteristically artful new songs.
