Description
HIGHWAY ROBBERY – For Love Or Money. RCA LSP-4735 RE. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD ALBUM. Originally issued on RCA Records in 1972. This reissue 2011. MEMBERS: Don Francisco, John Livingston Tunison IV, and Michael Stevens. TRACKS: Mystery Rider, Fifteen, All I Need (To Have Is You), Lazy Woman, Bells, Ain’t Gonna Take No More, I’ll Do It All Again, Promotion Man. DESCRIPTION: Formed in 1972, this LA based hard rock band signed to RCA later that year producing one of the best hard/heavy rock albums of the time; similarities to Stepson, Bull Angus, and Sir Lord Baltimore. Guitarist and leader Michael Stevens, with an early line-up of Highway Robbery, had been spotted opening up for an early incarnation of Earth, Wind, Fire by their Hollywood management team of Robert Cavallo and Joseph Rufallo; then also managing Little Feat, Weather Report, and the Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian. The management team signed up Stevens and his band and quickly hired on producer Bill Halverson, hot on the heels of his production work for CSN&Y, but first drummer/vocalist Don Francisco (previous leader of the band Crowfoot) was brought in to replace the original drummer as well as adding the talents of his spaced-out shrieking vocal acrobatics similar to what John Garner had brought to Sir Lord Baltimore. For both Francisco and Stevens it was an hallucinatory union. Original bassist Jan Tunison (also of Manitoba Hugger), now going as John Livingston Tunison IV, was retained. Stevens wrote all the songs, but it is the arrangements of bassist Tunison that gives this album its kick. The album was recorded quickly with all the energy and fire of their live shows, but RCA shelved the first version stating that their was no radio hit (i.e., top 40 single). Stevens responded with All I Need giving the album its most stylistically out of place track. The album finally made its debut, but by then their management team lost interest and dropped them as well as did RCA. Unfortunately, this led to the band’s breakup in 1973, leaving just this one album. Highly recommended to early heavy/hard rock fans!
Some closing notes:
Stevens was previously with The Boston Tea Party and also played on Atlee Yeager’s solo albums. New York native Don Francisco also had played with Atlee; both of them play on the Atlee album Flying A Head (I try to stock a CD reissue of this in my listings). After the Highway Robbery Francisco joined up with Ron Elliott (Beau Brummels) in the group Pan and later played in Linda Rondstat’s band. In 1977 he formed the Big Wha-Koo who recorded three albums. His lengthy recording history runs well into the 80s. Tunison formed the band Manitoba Hugger in DeKalb, Illinois in 1969 while attending Northern Illinois University, after which he headed for Los Angeles to “follow my calling as a full time hipster musician.” You can read an interview with John conducted in 2013 that appears on It’s Psychedelic Baby website; includes more details on Highway Robbery and other background material.

NOTE TO POTENTIAL BUYERS: If the jacket or disc (unless sealed) is punched, marked, or cut in any manner, denoting a promotional/review copy, I will state that as part of the item description. Also if an issue is a "music club" edition, that will be noted in the item description. (The below information was last updated 10/08/22)
If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. Hopefully, sharing some of this information in my descriptions will help educate and enhance your listening experience.
All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.
