Health, the American industrial rockers return with album number six. Or is it? Ostensibly a continuation of their fifth album Rat Wars, the sides of Conflict DLC are labelled as C and D. Whilst Conflict DLC and Rat Wars are intended as a whole, two sides of the same coin, they are slightly different beasts. For the most part, Conflict DLC is a might tighter and aggressive album 'VIBE COP' mixes an almost dreamy chorus with the kind of unrelenting attack that filled Ministry's Psalm 69 album (for example). The band themselves claim that this album is more "fun" than previous releases, and there are certainly more lighter moments in amongst the machine-like onslaughts. The truth is, that much of the fun comes from those ridiculously heavy sections, such all-out blast that ends 'Trash Decade' or relentless pummelling at the mid-point of final track 'Wasted Years'. There are moments of genuine beauty in amongst the blasts, with the epic 'Thought Leader' industrial goth pop finding the band in stadium mode. They follow this with 'Don't Kill Yourself' which, thanks to the production of Stint, possesses a pop-nous married to serious subject matter. This is the major conflict at the heart of Conflict DLC, fun presentation and production hits serious subject matter head on. Is it "fun"? Yes. Depending on how you define fun.
