'Hall Of The Mountain Grill'
United Artists, UK, 1974
UAG 29672
In 1973 HAWKWIND defied their detractors by scoring a resolutely classic hit single with 'Silver Machine'. Sung by bass buster Lemmy the band's wacky blend of hard rock, progressive rock and space rock ushered them to the forefront of a movement that seemed to thrive on chaos and experimentation. 'The Hall Of The Mountain Grill' is no exception to that rule showcasing a band eager to capitalize on that momentum despite the loss of a couple of key members including captain of the bizarre Bob Calvert. The music is exhaustive churning riff rock launched on the back of the seven minute long 'Psychedelic Warlords', a super amalgam of everything 'wind-tastic including Dave Brock on blast furnace guitar.
The artwork, as always, is crucial to the plot - from the very capable fingers of long time co-hort Barney Bubbles - evoking a barren desolate world half Earth and half Mars. The inner sleeve has a picture of the infamous 'Mountain Grill' greasy spoon restaurant located on the Portobello Road just under the West Way - a favourite haunt of the band and, funnily enough, myself during the mid seventies. A piping hot mug of tea and a bacon sarnie meant that you were king of the scene in those days.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
