Hi, I am Mike, now 51. Old enough to remember the golden era of original, high quality music, bands, artists.

Also records from the 1960s and 70s bought from the shops from new, I have been a music collector and enthusiast for over 37 years now. We all wish we could turn back the clock and buy those wonderful brand new records from the 60s and 70s, but alas, this is not possible; so I always try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. No vinyl/music lover really would choose to buy second-hand, but this is only way now to own these valuable, prized and elusive items now. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, a couple more at weekends if time permits, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirety, not just bits to guess a grade - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story. I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested reader – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get and scanned labels will give a more accurate representation of the genuine colour than flash photography where light is variable. I cannot guarantee one hundred percent is exact colour matching for covers - this depends on the lighting at the time and that is out of my control, but I feel sure most items will be very close to the actual real item. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert and vice-versa. POSTING & PACKING: What You Get: I post all my UK items on FRIDAY every week, most will arrive Saturday to make signed-for delivery easier. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT mailers) with the record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with TWO massively thick stiffners for even extra protection and bubble wrap if deemed necessary. These stiffners are the thickest possible and custom supplied for ‘Oneadayrecords’ – these are NOT commercially available and you will not have seen thicker protection anywhere. The cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW heavy duty soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. Printed address labels are used as well as ‘Fragile’ tape for that extra professional touch for the packet. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. Customers requests or special needs for P&P will be respected if at all possible but NOT surface mail abroad. I never make profit on posting and offer probably the cheapest and safest shipping possible. Weight of this Record: 131 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce: early copies this clean are not easy to find complete and in this type of condition. This includes the original Log Book and (unusually) a very strong cover and a very lightly played record. These type of albums were rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs and often were swapped around and played into submission (often under the influence of ‘substances’). The intricate cover is very rarely found even a genuine EX and this one is even better than that. This copy even includes the UA tan inner that only was included with the earliest examples – a top quality, complete copy which in real terms is rarer than ‘scarce’.

Brief Artist & Album Info: I feel a great album to offer on the Winter Solstice – a band noted for these type of events. After the more brilliant psych-rock of the debut album, this was now a major shift to acid, progressive space-rock and few bands did it better than early Hawkwind. Raw and hypnotic, this is a real mind-bending album. Repetitive power-riffs with swirling synths and Nik Turner’s eerie wailing treated electric sax and flute, Hawkwind took their sound into a new dimension and thrilled stoned-out audiences wherever they performed. The line-up (or crew as the cover states) on this trip-fest were: Nik Turner - alto sax, flute, audio generator, vocals; Dave Brock - vocals, electric guitar, acoustic 6 and 12 string, audio generator; Dave Anderson - bass, guitars; Del Dettmar - Synthesiser; Terry Ollis - drums; Dik Mik - Audio generator. Their famous Stacia danced, and sometimes totally nude to spaced-out audiences - she features on the back cover, luckily (?), she’s slightly shot out-of-focus. Spectacular live, loud, controversial and totally on a different planet, this was real acid rock and how these guys survived those heady days to still be performing today is quite amazing. Last year’s documentary on BBC4 was a revelation and a major insight into the history of this amazing band. In Search of Space starts with the sixteen minute epic ‘You Shouldn’t Do That’, a typically thumping riff driven Hawks classic but there is a fine mix of dreamy spaceadelia with psych mixed in also. A brilliant (but delicate) packaged album too, with a double front opening gatefold with internal down opening inner flap, fragile enough in-itself, but made even more so by a recess and tab and both opening front ‘gates’ have zig-zag edges which always bend and fray, very few will be found devoid of creasing, burring, splits or tears. Often the victim of storage inside protective inners that caught these vulnerable parts when put inside. Included also is the Hawkwind Log Book - a delicate 24-page ‘surreal flight manual’ that only came with early issues of this record, as did the UA tan inner – both are in very fine conditions – the delicate book is exceptional, it’soften seen falling apart or badly torn. The record is heavily pressed and immaculate, to enjoy this one at its best, it must be played loud!! Most prog collectors will know the conditions this set is normally found in, and this is exceptional by anyone’s standard. Most Hawkwind fans will enjoy this one and I consider this a rare opportunity to own one this fine.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High+: [Unlaminated covers are always the most vulnerable for rubbing, fading, sticker tears and ringwear, gatefolds are more prone still and the darker they are, the more this type of wear occurs and shows. Some sleeves have a textured finish or die-cut shaped edges or ‘windows’. These are even more delicate and the hardest to find in top condition. Fully laminated covers are more resistent to wear but often the laminate ages with dulling, creases and blistering. Many 60s covers have outer flipback construction, these are very vulnerable to damage]. (US covers are the most fragile of all, very rarely laminated and made with thick brittle card that rubs and ringwears badly. Seams and edges split easily). Please see format below to access this cover’s potential for wear and damage.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ (arguably better still considering just how vulnerable this one is to wear and damage). Its a multi-opening gatefold format, unlaminated as described above. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford.

Cover Front: Both the zig-zag shaped opening flaps are in very clean and sharp conditions with barely any traces of any rubbing to the vulnerable black ink. Both retain an unusual freshness with few marks. Hardly any creasing to the front at all with just a few fine hairlines to the right edge and to the bottom right corner tip. The recess for the lug tab (right) is pristine perfect and without doubt the least ‘used’ I have yet seen. The edges neat and unburred and retaining all ink. The tab (left) that slots into the recess is exceptional given that most are burred and tatty, again this has great shape and definition and any very light edge burring is confined just to the bottom area and with no creasing and just a fine edge rub. I emphasise quickly any wear or burring on this impossible part is tiny which I hope my close up shot of this area shows. The actual score fold has clearly hardly ever been bent in anger and this also retains all ink and artwork – this is highly unusual, this ‘hinge’ part often is weakened, torn or tatty, this remains sharp. clean and unstressed. The actual zig-zags are the real test for this cover: All the edges and points here are very sharp indeed, on the inside AND outside with no splits or tears, all points sharp with practically no burring or fraying on any of them. All the edges are sharp and these front flaps will not be found much than this easily. The freshness and lack of damage on what is one of rock’s most delicate and unforgiving covers is very refreshing indeed.

Cover Back: Probably just as well this infamous back cover was taken out of focus or it almost certainly would have been banned. Yes the famous Stacia is shown dancing in full naked glory. Lemmy described her on the TV documentary as ‘amazing’ – she used to apply herself up in blue ‘paint’ and stand their like an ancient leader or goddess. This again is exceptional showing none of the usual ringwear these types often do. Clean and devoid of significant creases, again the bottom corner tips are very slightly dinked. But with few traces of any rubbing or wear, the lack of scuffing or marks is very unusual and this back must be one the best I have seen on this title yet. There is one small pressmark just right of centre but this has modest visibility and this famous back looks attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The first face on opening the front flaps is exceptional with practically no wear at all and uncreased bar the bottom of the hinge corners. The back of this flap and the real inner-gatefold are both immaculate and unworn as are the back of the opening flaps, The back of the lug recess is amazing too with no traces of ink loss or rubbing, all reitterating just how little handling or use this cover has had. Finding the these spiked, shaped parts this clean with so little traces of burring and thickening is rare and unusual.

Top Edges: Very slightly thickened on these single thickness edges. Any burring or feathering is very light and mild and few (if any really) escape it totally.

Bottom Edge: The front pair are similar to above. The back is more ‘boxy’ and has only light surface rub traces – all very minor indeed and considering the cover ‘rests’ on this delicate edges, these are in great shape overall.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Light rub traces on the foldline, this edge is closed, the record simply sits inside.the cover’s centre area.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, minimal compression and square. Any rubbing is modest and light and all text is perfect and unworn which is never common on this one.

Corners: The top pair are in great condition with little wear. The bottom pair have light creasing to the tip areas but on a cover of this delicate and intricate design, this is almost to be expected and few will have less.

Cover Summary: Great artwork and concept, but longevity maybe was not considered when designed. It does take an exceptional amount of care to keep one looking even EX, the front and back in particular often rub badly and the shaped flaps rarely get seen undamaged, ironically this often happens when inserting into a protective cover – the utmost care is required. The lack of ringwear is a massive bonus on the back. All factors taken into consideration, this may be one of the best examples you will be offered for some time and it should please most collectors.

The Inner: Around EX, unlined. Mostly clean and untorn or split with fairly robust flipback type construction. A smallish crease near the bottom edge and a record impression has formed over time that has slightly darkened in places. I doubt if the record has been removed for simply years, but will now be kept within my included brand new lined inner.

The Book (The Hawkwind Log): EX++, as close to Mint(-) as they get. Printed on very thin paper, not too dissimilar to newprint but better. A pivitol part of this album, many are offered with it missing and later copies did not even include it. Still very secure with both original staples firmly in place with no pulling or stressing. These are punched to the left and right of centre. All 24 pages are superb with no tearing or creasing, even the cover pages are clean and neat. A few of the bottom pages have the printing web nicks on the edges – all normal of course– newspapers have them also – all part of the manufacturing process. Clean with few marks or blemishes and clearly modestly handled and again one of the best I have seen for some time, this is a fragile piece and absolutely essential to make this set complete – this is as spaced-out as the record.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and quite honestly, tempted to grade it Mint. A stunning visual copy and barely even played on all the evidence. Pristine clean, with immaculate shine, intense black and heavily pressed on quite thick vinyl. This record has hardly any marks at all and is in a league apart from most copies found. Simply compare this record (and cover and contents) to most seen of found, many being in shocking conditions. This, possibly the earliest pressing made, will be near impossible to find much better for fresh clean looks.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This exceptional Hawkwind record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a clean recording, a slightly muted production that needs high volume to be enjoyed at its best, most Hawkwind fans will know this of course. Simply crank up the volume and then it comes to life with a vengeance. Any surface sounds are minimal with even the few quiet passages playing cleanly with little unwanted, no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will play much better than this overall. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has clearly been generally well stored and looked after, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this acid-rock classic. This copy will prove near impossible to find significantly better.

End Piece: An album that shows up sometimes, but rarely in these fine, and complete conditions. My experience of this title is more for poor, damaged covers and heavily played, often heavily scratched records with the inner and certainly log book missing (or in tatters). This superbly pressed copy bucks the trend and retains high quality in all departments. Although not the most technically gifted or critics favourite band of all time, they did what they brilliantly and pleased their loyal fans. Hawkwind’s early albums were perfect for those days of rock experimentalism and excess, and live they were always exciting – this is a studio album by the way. Classic acid space-rock and fans of this band and genre will love it, a strongly recommended complete copy that takes you into the next dimension.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
