Label Conditions: Both in fantastic condition: very clean and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: MLS 40001.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 154 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: A very strange and obscure psych-based album from 1967. Initially issued on red vinyl but the black vinyl pressing is no less common. In fact it appears the red version shows up more often when this elusive album does show up. Hapshash & The Coloured Coat were best remembered for being a designers. They produced some astonishing album covers in the 1960s including Art’s ‘Supernatural Fairy Tales’ and the brilliant psychedelic ‘Disraeli Gears’ by Cream. Also astonishing colour psych posters from the same era. Being mainly graphic designers and artists and not having much in the way of any musical background these under producer Guy Stevens with backing from Art, they made this album. Very raw with plenty of percussion and chants, this could easily have inspired the early sound of Amon Duul – mark I that is. Stoned acid-soaked sounds and psychedelia, all very trippy for the times, this album will appeal to fans of the aforementioned early incarnation of the underground Krautrock scene. The album features beautiful artwork that is fully laminated. This early black pressed version includes the rare insert. A very spooky shiny silver and black card mini poster that is unmounted and almost as new. This will rarely be seen like this. The very heavy-pressed record has barely been played, typically from this collection. The only blemish is a small chip right near its beginning with around four clicks only and NO tracking problems. If you enjoy trips into the psychedelic underground, this is for you, a rare opportunity indeed.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate.

Cover Grade and Format: I cannot grade this beautiful piece of art less than Mint(-). A single, fully laminated cover that was printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Stunning artwork seen through very clean, fresh and clear laminate. This has minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling and barely a noteworthy crease to be seen. Any non-adhesion is minimal too, with just the odd very small, super-fine sliver on the spine edge. The only slight dulling is near the top and bottom against the record’s rim but only under angled light. Few marks at all and so unblemished, it almost looks sprayed on. Another time-piece of stunning artwork that should thrill the connoisseur collector.

Top Edge: Very straight and unworn, no abrasions at all.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and not feathering, any burr traces minimal. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression tiny and very mild. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: All four almost as new, very sharp and undamaged.

Cover Summary: A gorgeous all round example of this rare and beautiful 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This stunning item should please most collectors.

The Insert: If the album itself were not scarce enough, this insert is even rarer. Easily grades Mint(-) and so easily chipped and damaged. This is black printed over silver and very fragile indeed. How its surived virtually unblemished all these years is testament to the original owner’s care. This is unmounted, uncreased and undamaged. There are even very few surface marks. This was designed by Nigel Waymouth and Michael English. Spooky, almost surreal images, do not underestimate the rarity of this elusive insert.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ because of the small chip on side one as mentioned already (if this is an issue, do not bid). A super visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. Any other marks are minuscule and faint and have no effect on sound. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fine record plays up to and mostly above its high visual grading with little to fault. A tiny few clicks on the mark but no tracking issues, little else on a very clean, heavy record. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no other noteworthy pops or clicks were heard. Few copies will outperform this early black pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing, the few clicks apart, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderfully obscure record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better, and indeed hard to find at all and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
