New York duo Armand Hammer (billy woods and Elucid) joined forces with veteran producer the Alchemist for Haram, a stark and tightly wound record that pushes both parties into uncharted territory. Alchemist lays down woozy loops and crumbling soul fragments, cut through with eerie space and sudden dissolves. Over this, woods and Elucid spit dense, metaphor-heavy verses, circling themes of colonialism, violence and survival with razor precision. 'Sir Benni Miles' sets the tone with claustrophobic atmosphere, while 'Black Sunlight' floats under Kayana's hook, and 'Falling Out the Sky' pulls Earl Sweatshirt into the fold with typically off-kilter poise. On 'Chicharrones', Quelle Chris adds to the record's grotesque humour, while closer 'Stonefruit' ends in meditative unease. Confrontational yet hypnotic, Haram captures the duo's uncompromising vision, reframed through Alchemist's bloodied soundscapes.
