Sandbox has the great, tight, preternaturally tuneful flow that is a hallmark of most GBV records, but the endearing thing about it is that it captures the sound of a young band trying to define themselves and unafraid of paying homage to their contemporaries and influences. This is unmistakably GBV but I also hear the Shoes, and other late '70s power pop groups of that ilk, The Dream Syndicate, early R.E.M., Green on Red, '60s garage-pop one-offs like The Music Explosion, late period Flamin' Groovies, and, more than anything, Roky Erickson, believe it or not. Bob and Roky have a lot in common, both concocting an utterly sincere oddball fantasy world filled with seemingly nonsensical digressions, tropes, and repeated themes that make sense in a larger context.
What I like most about this record though is how Bob Pollard really experiments with his vocals here, trying different singing styles and methods of phrasing. It's a bold move for a debut record, but unsurprising considering the man's prolific nature. - Tracks:
