GLENN CARDIER An Authentic Force

Glenn Cardier has been writing and performing moving, insightful, powerful and important songs for more than thirty years. His intriguing evolution has given us something like a cross between John Prine and John Lee Hooker. With captivating presence, a commanding vocal style and a gloriously perverse point of view that produces songs which take firm hold and linger long, he comes dangerously close to being certified as a national treasure. These are the words of respected author and rock historian Glenn A Baker, and is indeed sparkling praise for Glenn Cardier, the contemporary bluesy-folk singer-songwriter who is fast re-establishing himself as one of Australias premier live performers. Glenn Cardier, originally from Brisbane has long made Sydney his muse. A few may remember Glenn Cardier from a very fine collection of albums he released in the 70s. Glenn was there along with many other new found folk influenced voices of introspection and personal protest - Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Carole King, Ross Ryan - but offering a rather more humourous bent than most. Others may remember Glenn from his wonderful appearances with a touring Spike Milligan during the 80s. But it is Glenn Cardier today that an ever increasing number of people are discovering and consequently raving about. And those new to Glenn Cardier will find a refreshingly honest performer, overflowing with a melodic canon of original blues and roots based songs. As Keith Glass (Rhythms Magazine) observes, his forte being slightly, delightfully off-centre songs, a la Tom Waits & Captain Beefheart. It is from the deep well of traditional roots that Glenn has drawn his unique take on contemporary storytelling. Add to that a healthy dose of melancholy and rocknroll, and Glenn Cardier makes for a truly original experience. And it is this authentic Glenn Cardier a force to be reckoned with - that is garnering further attention. Wth his two recent and superb albums, Rattle The Cage and House Of Mirrors, Glenn Cardier has unleashed his full creative musical muscle on a fresh canvas, and is now enjoying the high critical acclaim he has long deserved. I am amazed at Cardiers guitar playing - never a standout on previous recordings - but its his voice that sounds so much better. Its aged like a good wine: gruff and gravelly yet emotional...this new album deserves wide exposure. Perhaps thats where the title of this CD comes from! Chris Spencer, Keeping Records on Glenns Rattle The Cage For Glenn's live performances, the plaudits are even more exceptional and brimful of praise! You know something special is about to happen when the front row of the audience is overflowing with the headline musicians at the festival. So it was at Glenn Cardiers final concert at Chewton this year. Andrew Pattison, Music Producer,Promoter - Troubadour Weekend Glenn Cardier made our jaws drop with his mad mix of black humour, tenderness and crafty songwriting that had every singer songwriter in the room transfixed in admiration and jealously! How did he do that? Kavisha Mazzella, Musician Glenn Cardier has picked up where he left off years ago. On stage he is witty, articulate and musically inventive, effortlessly moving from bollocking barrelhouse to confessional ballads. He left them begging for more. Al Ward, Co-Director, Blue Mountains Festival of Folk, Roots and Blues Late 2005 saw Glenn Cardier touring with Spike Milligans daughter, playing and presenting the Spike Milligan documentary, I Told You I Was Ill . Glenns song, Free To Fly is featured in the documentary. In 2006 Glenn has wowed them at the Burke & Wills and Troubadour Weekends and supported Judy Collins on her Australian tour and Sir Bob Geldof at his Sydney show. A musical encounter with Glenn Cardier offers a delightful mix of inspired singing and playing, from gentle to rollicking crafty songwriting to humourous storytelling. In other words, a magical musical experience that should not be missed.
