Description
Glen Adams & The Upsetters – You Can’t Hide Love / Paul Sinclair with Watty Burnett All Stars – Perfidia – Lover’s Rock LR-DIS 08 (UK)
A very rare twelve-inch EP on Dennis Harris’s Lover’s Rock label – the label says ‘You Cannot Hide What’s Inside’ and no artist is given, but it is, of course, ‘You Can’t Hide Love’ by Glen Adams (and the Upsetters). Not sure how this Black Ark recording ended up on Lover’s Rock, but obviously there was already a connection between Dennis Harris and Lee Perry, Harris having released, among others, Junior Byles’s ‘The Long Way’ and Susan Cadogan’s ‘Hurt So Good’ on his DIP label at around the same time.
The designated A-side is Paul Sinclair’s version of ‘Perfidia’ followed by an instrumental version of the same tune. (The latter cut also opens the B-side of the equally rare Twelve Tribes of Israel album on Dennis Harris’s Lucky label, Lucky LY 5004, released in 1976. On the back of this album, mention is made of the Watty Burnett All Stars; as the scans show, W. Burnett also listed as the producer on the disc at hand. (Paul Sinclair’s only other recording that I know of is a version of ‘Puppet on a String’!)
The main track here, of course, is track 1, side B: Glen Adams’s ‘You Can’t Hide Love’ (released on Capo in Jamaica), actually a cover of Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘Can’t Hide Love’. The dub version is not included, instead we get a tasty but uncredited instrumental version of ‘Blue Moon’.
Condition: With the exception of the vocal version of ‘Perfidia’ which has a couple of clicks, the record is in at least VG+ condition and possibly a notch better (please listen to snippets of the four tunes below). Labels are basically clean though there’s some slight sticker residue on the ‘You Can’t Hide Love’ side and what looks like scratched initials on the ‘Perfidia’ side (please see scans).
