Description
Long Island, NY's Glassjaw have long been trendsetters, an aural enigma and a band that has existed without context. Since emerging from the DIY post-hardcore scene with a sound as melodious as it is discordant, Glassjaw have been a constant influence and inspiration to countless bands and loyal fans. Ask platinum-shifting acts like the Deftones or The Used, both of whom have borrowed from Justin Beck's blueprint of syncopated and jarring guitar work, melded with frontman Darryl Palumbo's alternately soaring and snarling vocals.
Now, with the addition of rhythm section Travis Sykes (bass) and Chad Hasty (drums), Glassjaw has evolved into an intensely musical and rhythmically articulate band that has as much in common with the progressive leanings of Tool and Mastodon or the spacey dynamics of Deftones as they do with the Alternative Press set.
Now with Material Control, Glassjaw's first full-length LP in 15 years, following a smattering of singles and tour-only EPs over the past few years, the quartet has emerged with a new sense of ferocity and focus. Don't call it a comeback or an attempt to recapture past glories. Material Control is a beast of a record as challenging as it is engaging. Written and recorded on the band's own terms, it's uneasy listening with a bloodied heart.
