This is a nice copy of Roberto Gerhard’s “The Plague” with the National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Antal Dorati as issued by Decca Records (catalogue # Head-6). The piece is a spoken English translation of Camus’ The Plague with music by Roberto Gehard. The narrator is Alec McCowen. It was recorded in Constitution Hall in Washington DC on May 11, 1973. The producer is James Mallinson and the engineers were Kenneth Wilkinson, Colin Moorfoot, and Michael Mailes. The records are very clean with no scuffs or scratches but does have some intermittent surface noise when played. The records were pressed in England. The sound is excellent and the recording is on the TAS (The Absolute Sound) Super Disk List of audiophile recordings. The music is very modern but fits the text very well. An interesting work. The records have been cleaned with a VPI record cleaner and treated with LAST record preservative. More recently they were re-cleaned with an Audio Desk untra-sonic record cleaner and demagnetized. Also included is a LP sized tri-fold insert with notes and text in English. The insert has a few stains but no tears or sharp bends. Both the cover and insert have a notch cut into them since this was a “cut-out” record. The cover has some ring wear on the front and back but there are no seam splits. Multiple records can be combined in an order to save shipping costs.
