“Gathering” by Gary Marks (Arewea Records, ULT 74008 Stereo)

Super rare private folk jazz progressive psych LP from New York, 1974. I honestly believe that all those words are necessary to describe this LP, but what’s harder to describe is just how outstanding it is. Imagine a folk singer with an excellent melodic sensiblilty singing with a spiritual jazz combo like the ones on Strata East or Black Jazz (certainly with a lighter touch than some, maybe like Stanley Cowell material) and with stunning poetic lyrics full of complex and spectacular imagery. This LP is starting to gain a reputation among collectors of folk psych and private pressings, but it needs to be better known. Released only to mail-order customers who wrote in for copies, it’s quite rare. Players include: David Samuels on vibes, Michael Cochrane on piano, John Scofield on guitar (this might be his first appearance on record), Paul Brickey on bass, Larry Schneider on sax and Chip White on drums. If you love bizarre and beautiful music, don’t sleep on this one. No booklet, unfortunately.

Condition: Cover = EX- (Some edge wear, no seam splits, no ring wear)/ Record = EX (No spindle marks, clean & shiny, some very light surface noise in places due to quality of pressing)

Postage for 1-2 LPs within USA: Media Mail = $4.00 or Priority Postage = $6.50, each additional LP add $2.00 (per LP).

Insurance is optional, but any uninsured package is the Buyer’s responsibility (At Your Own Risk) and I cannot refund lost or damaged packages. US Insurance rates are as Follows: 0-$50.00 = $1.30; $50.01 - $100.00 = $2.20; $100.01 - $200.00 = $3.20; $200.01 and Higher = $4.20. Overseas, please inquire.
