First released in 1981, it's perhaps hard to imagine the impact that The Gun Club's debut had, there is little doubt that its influence is far reaching and is still being felt today. Whilst LA punk was spitting out hardcore in the shape bands like The Germs, or twisted takes on 1960s rock n roll, The Gun Club's Jeffrey Lee Pierce was tapping into the blues. Fire Of Love just didn't sound like anything else at the time. The open-tuned slide guitar sitting at the heart of the majority of these songs, can now be heard utilised by bands like The White Stripes or Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, but in the early 80s, the sound was revelatory. The push and pull of 'For The Love Of Ivy' lurches from moments of quiet, to explosions of noise. Lines like "gonna kill everyone who's ever done me harm" are given real force; as the punchline of a racist, Elvis-looking lunatic hunting his ex. 'Sex Beat' marries the devil's music with sexuality, and feels edgy and dangerous. The cover of 'Preaching The Blues' takes Robert Johnson's blues on a turbo charged odyssey, taking roots music, and repurposing it , with genuine respect for the original, for a new generation. On the surface 'Jack On Fire' is a jaunty delta stomp, but dig just a little, and the lyrics reveal an murderous character with deviant sexual desires. It wouldn't be a massive stretch of the imagination to suggest that this may have laid the groundwork for Nick Cave's 'Stagger Lee'. Fire Of Love is a breathless groundbreaking album, without which, it's entirely plausible many of today's most popular bands simply wouldn't exist. There's a reason why Jack White thinks many of these songs should be taught in school.
