Hi, I am Mike, I have been a music collector for over 30 years now. I always still try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find - I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any interested collector. You may notice I only submit one or two items a day for Ebay; time rarely allows more as I Play-Grade every record I offer (on a Rega 3 deck with Ortofon cartridge) - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story - I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested collector. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. A ten pounds record that plays close to new is as important to the collector as a 250 pound record that plays less well. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. Album Title: Permanent Damage

Cat Number: STS 1059 Stereo.

Label and Condition: Straight, original 1st pressing. Truly magnificent examples of this scarce collectable label that always specialised in all things bizarre, original and alternative - as you would expect from its founder, the great Frank Zappa. These two labels are super clean and show only light and very light spindle traces, and no wear around the centre hole. You will rarely see UK Straights looking quite this clean (Please see label scan for all information needed).

Rarity: Yes this is pretty rare especially being the UK pressing. The US version does seem to crop up a little more often - but not THAT often - and that one sometimes includes the book - not always. The UK version as far as I am aware, never included the book which is a real shame because its essential for explaining what all the songs are about and includes all lyrics, and this very ellusive but vital insert is even rarer than the record itself. So what I have done is include a replica copy of the original US book - the original is black and white so this copy will appear looking very similar to the original. The omission of this book from the UK pressings really was ridiculous, it depicts as strongly as the record those crazy times and includes a forward by Frank Zappa, who also appears, along with several members of the Mothers of Invention and produces. Some interesting photos too.

Brief Artist & Album Info: In my humble opinion the most essential of the Zappa related artists album to own – it’s a magnificent underground album - you wont want this one to end. One of the rarest albums on Zappa’s Straight label, this would have probably sold only a handful of copies back in the late 60s. As stated earlier, Zappa produces and appears, along with Jeff Beck, early Mothers: Jimmy Carl Black; Roy Estrada; Ian Underwood and Don Preston. An amazing collection of psych songs - some very catchy and they quickly get lodged into the subconscious -mixed with groupie culture dialogue - check out the songs titles below to get some idea of what to expect. The dialogue is at times very amusing, young sweaty schoolgirls encountering a ‘dyke’ gym-teacher. Comparing breast sizes and men friends. A guy asks how much to j*** off when viewing the ladies in stockings - I think you get the picture - outrageous by name and nature. So who were the GTO’s? An all-female group, initially known as the Laurel Canyon Ballet Company, alonside the notorious Plaster Casters, the best-known members of the 60s groupie sub-culture. After a time each member abandoned her respective surname and became Miss Lucy, Miss Pamela, Miss Christine (died 5 November 1972, appeared on the cover of Zappa’s masterpiece Hot Rats, Miss Sparky, Miss Mercy, Miss Sandra (heavily pregnant when this cover was made) and Miss Cinderella. The septet then moved to Zappa’s home when Miss Christine became governess to his daughter Moon and they occasionally performed live with the Mothers of Invention. Zappa produced the bulk of this album and Lowell George (Little Feat) was credited to two tracks. The album almost never made release at all when Misses Mercy, Cynderella and Sparky were arrested on drug related charges. The seven disbanded soon after and went their own ways. This album is very obviously rare, most early albums on Straight are - few had any commercial potential and this is no exception. This original EJ Day cover is a slightly mixed bag, its never easy to find in EX condition let alone anything approaching impossible mint, no lamination and a heavy pressed record makes this one very prone to wear because of the deep rich colouring. The front is quite nice, the centre spread superb, but the back not so good with the almost mandatory ringwear. The actual record is immaculate - close to mint - I simply cannot imagine finding this record in much better shape. The replica book has 12 pages and will prove invaluable to the winning bidder, it has reproduced incredibly well, and will truly enhance this amazing album.

Cover Condition and Details: Due to rarity and variation putting an overall grade on this is futile, so I grade the three main parts individually, also taking into account the fragility of this particular item. Front: EX. Back: VG(-). Centrefold: EX++. gatefold format and unlaminated, Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford. A very respectable example of this fabulous cover, this will never be easy to find, better ones do exist, but try to find an available one. This should please many collectors.

Cover Front: Generally clean and attractive with little wear and no creasing. Retains rich colour and shows only a couple of lightish rub traces near the top (slightly more) and bottom (very light), overall very light for this item. No (permanent) damage or deep indentations, a few marks and surface traces. Some edgewear just about encroaches onto the very foot of the bottom on the right corner.

Cover Back: I have yet to find the back of this album devoid of ringwear and sorry this is no exception. The very deep purple artwork and the thick record is a huge clash of longevity and this backk suffers always (unless some clever person kept the LP out of the cover all its existence - likely eh?). Well this has a moderate ringmark along with a rub graze at the very bottom. That apart not that bad, general rubbing is modest really and the actual picture of Miss Christine and the macabre text underneath remains very solid and attractive with little wear at all. Creasing again remains light and minimal.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Magnificent with hardly any wear at all - these girls were wierd - check out the centrefold picture.

Cover Edges/Corners: Top: some lightish rubbing. Bottom: moderate(-). Record entry edge (right): pretty neat with little wear, minor feathering hint if being critical. Spine: Slightly compressed, some rubbing, more near corner tops, text has shifted more to the underneath and some has eroded, but this type is almost impossible to read on a solid spine as its printed in blue ink on the deep purple. Corners: All four show wear as you might expect, but not too bad, around moderate at worst or less for some. Summary: A collectors nightmare cover, its rare anyway, top copies are extremely rare indeed, taken into context this really is very respectable - the back apart this stands up proud.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++/Mint(-), clean and shiny and pressed on very heavy vinyl. A supreme example of this extinct record, little more to see than the odd faint fine hairline or surface trace on side one - no sound. A copy played very lightly for sure, is it likely a much cleaner copy will be offered - as stated UK copies of this are nearly impossible to find at all - any that will show up are unlikely to ever get close to matching this one. Underground, ‘weird’ and offbeat albums like this were rarely bought by hi-fi connoisseurs and perfectionists and more often than not ended up being trashed or written-off. Its unusual to find the obscure rarity looking quite like this - as average as the cover might appear, the record is pure class.

Sound Quality: A record that plays just as good as it looks with little unwanted. Top quality clean sound with no pops or ticks from memory. This is one of the very best sounding Straight albums I have yet heard. No distortion or sound degrading at all, vital of course and this proves to me its been only very modeestly played on what I feel sure is good stereo kit. The detail from the ‘music’ songs is superb with a real psych feel, another triumph for FZ’s production skills. Of course the appearance of the Mothers of Invention makes this an essential item for any Zappa collector - I had to wait a long time, and the arrival of Ebay to eventually get a copy for myself - no record fayre I have attended has ever had a copy for sale.

Final Summary: Without doubt one of the most original ‘one-off’ albums you will ever hear - it sums up that crazy band/groupie scene of the late 60s/early 70s perfectly. A strange, bizarre and totally off the wall album as you will ever wish to hear - along with An Evening With Wild Man Fischer this has to be included in any serious Zappa collection. This is also out of print on CD and prices for that are getting high too, again if you can find one. Even with the cover wear, an album with high investment potential, obscure original rarities like this are better than cash in the bank. This record simply will not appear often and I can honestly state you will be very unlikely to find this record much better. To conclude this advert I quote from the from the front page of the book, its a short preface written by Zappa: “The GTO’s write all their own lyrics and no subject matter covered by these lyrics was suggested by any outside source. The choice of subjects is a reflection of the girls’ own attitudes toward their environment.
