Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only a very few light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Both show dulling when viewed under angled light, the tell-tale patterning appears these have reacted with the polylining of the inner. However, the record’s playing surfaces have not and there is NO bag-rash on this record with both sides looking superb (and sounds the same).

Cat Number: LBS 83253.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Quite rare on the blue label: most seen are on the more familiar black Liberty label and this being the ultimate first pressing.

Brief Info: On their debut album ‘Scratchin’ the Surface’, The Groundhogs proved they were a very decent blues band. On this their second album things moved on apace and they quickly proved they were a superb blues-based rock band. This was not a major seller and a real gem that has now been somewhat overlooked and overshadowed by ‘Split’ and ‘Thank Christ for the Bomb’. ‘Blues Obituary’ said farewell to the pure blues sound and this is a high-octane powerhouse blues-based rock classic. Few were sold on the blue label with more interest shown retrospectively on the success of the aforementioned pair that really got them noticed in the ‘progressive rock’ field. Note the poignant cover: what appears to be McPhee lying in a coffin with an acoustic guitar – the vicar is the same man and the fact he still has a full head of hair will give away the great age of this album – yes now over forty years old. An elusive album on either black or blue Liberty label – the price guides do not separate for value – but the blue ultimate first pressing is much harder to find, these being heavier pressed and offering the finest of sound possible. This I feel the most difficult Groundhogs album to find and this is a splendid example.

Cover Grade and Format: I grade this cover as EX(-) but actually looks better to the eye. The reason for a half-mark downgrade is because it has a very neat hole punch near the bottom right corner. These often indicate a delection mark, but as far as I am aware, this album was not deleted. So I am unsure why this cover would have been punched at all. Anyway… a single fully laminated format that was printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate both sides retains a lovely shine and clarity with fine freshness. The poignant and mildly macabre front cover artwork is perfect for the album’s title and looks lovely. The hole punch is very neat and being situated near the bottom right corner (left on back of course), it has minimal visual impact as the eye is not drawn to it in any way. There are a few pressmarks and some lightish half moon surface creases, but again they do not detract from the attractiveness of the cover to any great degree and how many covers this substantial age do not have a few of these? The spine edge has lifted, again a trait of these full laminates that tighten over the years. Quite fine on the front with minimal visibility, more on the back, but no peeling on either side. Under light, some mildish friction rubs or dulling can be seen, normal viewing reveals none. So blemishes, yes, but honestly, little here detracts from what is still a lovely looking cover.

Top Edge: Barely any wear.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A fine spine: solid, straight with minimal compression. The ends are deeply pinched in manufacture and look really neat and sharp. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has a small few tiny surface hairline cracks.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs only and all retain excellent shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this morbidly classic late 60’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better, especially with a lovely genuine first pressed blue Liberty record inside. As stated above, it has numerous blemishes, but blemishes they are bar the hole punch and this will still better most of the really early ones seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++, A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just a couple of very fine surface marks that have no effect on sound. The playing surfaces look fantastic and fresh looking and look little handled. I doubt if this record had seen daylight for decades – the likely reason the inner had lightly adhered itself to the labels, a clear tell-tale sign. This wonderful vintage Groundhogs classic will prove difficult to find looking better, if the label ‘tarnish’ is an issue, do not bid.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely, genuine original first pressed record plays up to and mostly all above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing overall and sound is superb. Few copies will outperform this earliest pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly little handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this scarce record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
