Some 16 years after playing their first gigs in their home city, Oakland outfit The Grease Traps have finally got round to recording a debut album. Recorded in the legendary Kelly Finigan Transistor Sounds studio and mixed by Orgone producer Sergio Rios (a sticker for analogue authenticity), Solid Ground is a heavy and righteous romp that presents the eight-piece outfit as retro-futurist champions of a frazzled, flash-fried and exciting heavy funk sound that variously draws influence from vintage psychedelic soul, the Meters, Sly & The Family Stone, deep funk, the JB's and what they describe as "sweet lowrider soul". Production-wise, it sounds like something that could have been produced at the turn-of-the-80s, while the band's compositions get the most from their talented players and lead vocalist. Funk album of 2021? It's certainly up there.
