·       GRATEFUL DEAD - ANTHEM OF THE SUN  -  1968 WARNER BROTHERS STEREO LP WS-1749

·       INCREDIBLY RARE ALTERNATIVE WHITE COVER !!!

·       GENUINE US PRESSING

·       NOTE: ALL WHITE COVER PRESSINGS WERE MADE IN 1973/74 AND HAVE A WARNER BROTHERS PERIOD LABEL WITHOUT WEA LABEL ON THE LABEL'S EDGE (THE BURBANK BOULEVARD LABEL, ALSO AFFECTINATELY KNOWN AS “PALM TREES” LABEL). NONE OF THE ORIGINAL PRESSINGS ON GREEN W-7 GREEN WARNER BROTHERS LABEL WERE EVER ISSUED IN WHITE COVERS!!!.

·       STRANGELY, THIS VERSION OF THE COVER DOES NOT HAVE A “REMIXED IN SEPTEMBER 1971” DISCLOSURE LINE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BACK PANEL WHICH THE EARLIER (SECOND) PRESSING (IN REGULAR PURPLE COVERS AND ON GREEN “SHIELD” WARNER LABEL) DID HAVE!!! SOMEHOW, THIS LINE WAS LOST BETWEEN THE 1970-73 PRESSING AND THIS, 1973-74 PRESSING! FRANKLY, WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS. IT IS POSSIBLE – NOT LIKELY, JUST POSSIBLE – THAT THE RARE “WHITE” COVERS ACTUALLY HAVE “UNREMIXED” (ORIGINAL) VERSIONS OF THE ALBUM INSIDE?

·       THIS IS NOT AN IMPORT, RECORD CLUB RELEASE OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       COVER IS STILL PARTIALLY (ABOUT 85%) IN ITS ORIGINAL SHRINK (CELLOPHANE) WRAP

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·       FAIRLY THICK VINYL PRESSING On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the thickness of the vinyl as 7.

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you’ll get.  GUARANTEED!)

All early, Grateful Dead albums are becoming increasingly rare and scarce but this, the group’s second is monumentally rare in its WHITE incarnation (as you may remember, all original covers of this album were purple)

When Grateful Dead (probably Phil Lesh, who had a weak spot for tinkering and re-revising the group’s original mixes and original cover artworks) completely scrapped the original cover artwork of this album and replaced it with a white cover, they inadvertently created one of the biggest and most coveted Grateful Dead rarities in the hobby. This legendary album, one of the most veneered psychedelic rock albums ever made, came out with two distinct cover variations: both were gorgeous psychedelic paintings showing the Dead members as Hindu or Buddhist deities organized in a big Mandala wheel ; The first – original and much better known - version of the cover shows heads of the band members against the purple backdrop; However, this rare pressing from circa 1973/74 shows the band members against WHITE background. While we can’t be sure why this was done, it is possible that (a) Phil Lesh was on acid or something or (B) that the, pardon the pun “Cryptical Envelopment” of the original purple-hazed cover fell off, revealing the whiteness of the inner truth (yeah, right) or (C) that the whiteness of the cover symbolizes cocaine… Most likely, though, the explanation is probably quite trivial: someone at the pressing plant didn’t get the memo or couldn’t read and write…

The “white” covers were seemingly in print for only a nanosecond before they were withdrawn and replaced (again) with the original purple covers. This rare second (white) version of the cover is easily outnumbered by the first, more common purple version by a ratio of about 50:1 (our personal estimate, not based on any statistical sample or method). This is one of many rarities Grateful Dead accorded their fans in the course of their long career. Don’t miss this one!  Grab it now, or forever hold your Peace, Brother.

Track listing: That's It For The Other One: Cryptical Envelopment / Quadlibet For Tender Feet / Faster We Go --- New Potato Caboose --- Born Cross-Eyed --- Alligator --- Caution (Do Not Stop On The Tracks).

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

COVER IS STILL PARTIALLY (ABOUT 85%) IN ITS ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG+++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The cover has visible yellowish dust speckles and small stains scattered across both panels (front and back)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a light "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn (nothing significant)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
