Label Conditions: All four clean and attractive with spindle marks ranging from light to moderate.

Cat Number: WS 3001.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 146 / 150 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Quite rare on the original orange labels. The format changed from orange to green within the year of issue and this true first pressing would have only been available for a few months. Note too, this includes its original 55/- (£2 75p in decimal money) price sticker, again the currency changed around this time and pre-decimal original price stickers on this album will prove near impossible to find. This is guaranteed authentic and original and will be more than obvious to any winning bidder this has never been tampered with or removed.

Musicians: Graham Bond – alto saxophone, organ, piano, vocals; Dick Heckstall-Smith - alto and soprano saxophones; Jack Bruce – double bass; John McLaughlin – guitar; Ginger Baker – drums; Jon Hiseman - drums. Brief Info: This vintage album features members who later went on to form major bands, namely Jack Bruce, here on double bass and Ginger Baker in Cream and Heckstall-Smith and Jon Hiseman in Colosseum. These vintage recordings were recorded in 1963 (live) and 1966 in the studio and is a brilliant double set. This transforms the early Bond RnB sound to jazz rock and features Bonds deep vocal and dual saxes with Smith. The rhythm provided by the best in the business in Bruce and awesome drumming by Hiseman and Baker. Jazz fans will know all about the talents of guitarist McLaughlin of course. Great improvisation and class from these massively talented musicians, not hard to see where their future bands learnt their trade. For fans of this style, there could be no higher recommendation. Nice too to offer such an early example of the original orange label. A very fine copy bar one scratch at the very end of side three that has around 10 moderate clicks as the music ends and runs out. This has the hallmarks of needle drop as it arcs around the end of this side, slight shame, but it could have been a whole lot worse of course, being at the end, barely any of the music is spoilt with the final track pretty much finished. Still a significant blemish and if this is an issue, do NOT bid. That apart, the set plays very well indeed. I rarely offer records with such a clear scratch present, but situated where it is, it’s of far less significance with the side all but finished. The cover has light ringwear as most all will and some edge rubbing, again this apart, a very decent original example, and I like the 55/- pre-decimal price sticker that dates the cover perfectly. Not seen this one too many times and certainly a vintage gem that will give great entertainment for many years to come. Invaluable for Cream and Colosseum fans of course and a genuine historically important album.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High with two heavy records inside an unlaminated cover all these years, few will survive in top conditions with ringwear being rife on most.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-) an unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press.

Cover Front: Some mild rubbing and faint ring trace, far less than many would expect with heavy records inside. A few light marks and creases but overall still in attractive condition. The 55/- original price sticker is very neat, mild darkening around the rims but no picking or fading.

Cover Back: The back similar in most respects, a little more ring rubbing is evident and some edge rubs encroach into view too.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Not a great deal of wear inside here, minor friction type rubbing and odd crease or two but little else.

Top Edges: Around moderate rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate or slightly more rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Fairly sharp with a little wear but no feathering or trimming. Records entered on these right outside edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression and folded square, both right edges meet up perfectly together. There is light to moderate patchy rubbing, most on folds but the good news is the text has remained unaffected by wear and is all present and strong.

Corners: Again all have light+ to moderate rubbing in context with their respective edge. All retain reasonably tidy shape.

Cover Summary: Clearly a very wear-prone cover and few will avoid it. The main faces are still highly respectable and for me that is the important factor. Not one for the more discerning collector, but this is a scarce item and it will please many.

The Inners: The original inners on this set had been replaced with new polylined inners.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Side One: EX+, Side Two: EX, Side Three: has a scratch at end very end, you decide how much this degrades what otherwise is an EX, Side Four: EX. A very fine visual pair (bar the scratch) that are very clean, shiny, jet black and quite heavily pressed. A pair with modest plays on all the evidence, any other visual blemishes are few and very light with no noteworthy audio effect. Visually excellent records that should please many collectors again. But as always I say, if anyone has doubts because of the scratch at the end of side three, do not bid.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Side One backs side Four, issued in an era when people still used record players with stacking mechanism, something that was never recommended for long-players. Both records play up to their high visual grading with little to fault bar the very audable clicks at the very end of side three. By this time the music has all but ended with a little muted applause as the side ends and the clicks start. This is a very visible arc which notices mostly on the run out grooves as little touches the playing area, almost certainly resulting in an arm drop – we have all seen them and most often when they occur at the very start of the record when lowering the stylus. If it had to happen, better at the very end rather than the beginning. The album has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no other significant pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. With heavy use of reeds, tracking is harder and with the sound focused and sharp, this has no groovewear. So a mildly flawed gem, clearly the scratch will put a few off, but I do reitterate, when it happens, the music and side is almost ended. This set will still prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended. Any doubts on the conditions and gradings above, do not bid – simple.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
