Originally released in 1989, Start Today marked the sole LP from NYC Youth Crew hardcore punk heroes Gorilla Biscuits. Following on from 1988's self-titled EP, this album would pry the hardcore movement away from would be tough guy posers with a barrage of earnest anthems prioritising speed, melody and adolescent fury; touching on themes of inclusion ('Things We Say'), drug-free or "straight edge" living ('Time Flies'), veganism ('Cats & Dogs'), pride within the scene ('New Direction') and a vehement rejection of racist or xenophobic ideals ('Degradation'). Primarily written by guitarist Walter Schreifels (Youth Of Today, Quicksand, Rival Schools) and fronted by Anthony "Civ" Civarelli (before the majority of the band would later go on to form CIV), this enduring classic remains a pivotal piece of hardcore history as well as essential listening for any newcomers to the cause. Cited as a major influence by the likes of Saves The Day and Lifetime all the way up to Turnstile and even inspiring the name of Los Angeles upstarts Start Today, the album is also the highest selling release ever put out by the iconic Revelation Records, having sold well over 100,000 copies since its original pressing. Sidenote: For the UK affiliated, the hidden track cover version of Buzzcocks' 'Sitting Around At Home' has long remained a tongue-in-cheek fan favourite.
