Label Conditions: Both clean with fine freshness and attractive with only very light and fine spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A tiny few fine darker marks near the hole are just evident and probably over-emphasised on my high definition reflective scanner.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: A one-off album from a little-known white bluesman bought to the attention of Mike Vernon by fans who saw him busking on the Portobello Road in London. He then performed at the Blue Horizon club in Battersea with very enthsiastic results. This album was cut with backing from a young Fleetwood Mac, the only surprise is this was his only album on the famous blue blues label. His output over the years has been very light which is a real shame as he is clearly a hugely talented musician. Supreme guitar-work with brilliant use of the slide, he sounds a little like an acoustic Rory Gallagher. Originally from County Durham but moved down to London in 1967, the small cover blurb rated him very highly, making this one-off album all the more surprising. A rare one for sure, my first one ever and a strong copy it is too. For blues fans this is truly an unmissable album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. This covers the closed edge folds and ends on the back via the spine. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. The back has it’s original gold stereo sticker.

Lamination & Front: An absolutely superb looking front with wonderful artwork of the artist. This seen to absolute maximum advantage through ultra clean, clear, fresh and shiny laminate that has little to fault. Two very small blisters on the top edge remain near invisible with normal viewing and only one near moderate crease of note, near the left edge. Few few marks at all and minimal friction rubs or dulling. A light dull arc from the record rim near the top edge and a mere trace near the bottom (see only under light). A small corner rub, bottom right but the exposed strip on the right edge is practically unworn and very neat. A really lovely looker and one of the more elusive ones on this famous blues label.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive and being matt finished with no protection, this has few blemishes either. One small chip near the bottom right corner and two tiny surface marks a little further up (but look very hard). The stereo gold sticker is neat and still shiny and unrubbed. Hardly any rubbing or creasing with any rim impressions ultra fine and faint. This would be clearly prone to ringwear, but has largely avoided any of real note. Not only does this man sound a little like an acoustic Rory Gallagher, he looks a little like him too.

Top Edge: Mainly neat with little wear at all, just very mild thickening traces near the back panel centre.

Bottom Edge: A mild rub-abrasion on the right corner, little else to fault that apart.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straigh with minimal compression, a small chip near the bottom only. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, clear laminate.

Corners: Small tip rubs, a mild scuff-graze on the bottom right mentioned already. All retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very attractive Blue Horizon cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white solid unlined inner that has only mildly discoloured to give clues on it’s great age. All edges secure with minimal creasing and looking really neat.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a somewhat conservative grading for this lovely record. A couple of ‘natural’ manufacturing blemishes that I do not account for in my visual grading. One being a tiny pressing bump mainly between tracks that gives a few very gentle ‘taps’ (not clicks) like tapping your finger lightly on a wooden surface. The second is a cutting mark that follows a single groove for approximately an inch. This gives an ultra brief high pitched sound on stylus contact, the only real sound blemish of real note being honest. One usage surface mark has NO sound and any minor ultra fine surface traces are totally superficial, seen under light, few records this great age will avoid faint hairlines as the bare minimum. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, an incredible intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely top quality blues record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault bar the aforementioned brief blemishes on the ‘cutting’ process mark and small blister splash. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no other pops or clicks were noted and this is a clean pressing overall. Few copies will outperform this first issue significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A super recording and performance from this less-known white bluesman. One of the real gems on this famous blue label, this copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
