Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: ultra clean and highly attractive and I am struggling to find a single spindle trace.

Cat Number: V2002.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 127 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Brief Info: The first part of the ‘Radio Gnome’ trilogy, the others were ‘Angel’s Egg’ and ‘You’. Brilliant spaced-out, jazz-tinged, acid-prog and including their strongest ever line up that then included guitarist Steve Hillage. This is a superb record musically and very well pressed. Virgin were not always the most quietest of pressings and this, like other Gong albums has some quiet passages, but this plays beautifully. Even though this record looks almost like new and clearly barely even played – it is always a slightly nervous play-grade on Gong albums. This excelled and was a truly wonderful listen but being a very first pressing on the original first Virgin label format, this was less surprising. The cover is ultra clean and attractive, but does have a few issues. The front had a couple of small surface pulls (as the one and only owner told me, as he tipped them in). Quite well done but they can be seen (just below the teapot’s handle, and on the middle part of the spout). Also the centrefold appears to have some glue residue on the upper left face, this has a left a mark and a small pull on the right opposite side. Slight shame, I feel pretty sure the glue residue inside was from manufacture. Minus these issues, which are hardly serious, this would have likely been the very best orignal ‘Flying Teapot’ cover I had ever seen. The sheer freshness and lack of ‘real’ wear is a immediately apparent and it still looks lovely anyway. If the cover is an issue for any collector, do not bid.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: Minus the issues mentioned above, I would have graded this cover as Near Mint and would have easily justified it. With the marks and small pulls and enhancement, well it’s difficult to say definitively. So I won’t, you decide. As so many of these are seen badly rubbed, grubby and ringworn, I still consider this a lovely looking cover. An unlaminated gatefold format that was printed and made in England.

Cover Front: This looks lovely and retains a supreme rich colour with no grubbiness, rubbing or creasing. Rarely seen this cover looking so fresh and clean and devoid of ageing and real wear. As stated above, there are a couple of small surface tears which have been tipped-in. One is very small and shows little (below the teapot handle). The other on the spout is slightly larger but still fairly small. This does show a little more but hardly major and it does not draw the eye’s attention to any great degree. Still they are blemishes for sure, if this is an issue, do not bid. I feel sure it will still prove immensely difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is simply stunning and it looks little short of new with barely any marks or wear at all. Truly magnificent.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A moderate, what looks like a glue smear on the left towards the top, this has pulled a small piece of the surface opposite, this has not been tipped in. This apart, both faces look almost like new, any problem or doubts, do not bid.

Top Edges: The faintest of rub traces, but look hard.

Bottom Edges: Very light rub traces, slightly more near the ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this back edge, the front is neatly sealed and practically pristine.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is near perfect and unworn bar a fine hairline crease that has just clipped the ‘O’ in ‘GONG’. Little else to fault and still very clean too.

Corners: Small tip rubs, most bottom right but still only mild. All retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: Even with the small blemishes on the front, the exterior especially on this cover looks superb and shows a level of freshness and sheer good looks this cover often lacks these days. The colours so vibrant and attractive, I still feel most collectors will enjoy owning it, but of course with the flaws, not for the more discerning collector.

The Inner: The original plain white unlined inner is included iin near mint condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A fantastic Mint(-) it looks possibly unplayed prior to my sound-check. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and far more solidly pressed than the later ones. A copy devoid of any noteworthy blemishes or marks and not even run-in in vinyl terms. Any surface trace blemishes are minuscule and visually a super record that should please all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant Virgin record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for what is another challenging Gong album. Few copies will match or outperform this very first pressing I feel sure. For the few who purchased their albums on issue, most played them considerably and finding such beautifully clean, barely played copies is more than challenging. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove nigh-on impossible to find better and can be strongly recommended. But if the cover issues are indeed an issue…

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
