Gil Scott-Heron was at his most righteous and provocative on this album. The title cut was a moving, angry summation of the social injustices Scott-Heron felt had led the nation to a particularly dangerous period, while "The Bottle" was a great treatise on the dangers of alcohol abuse. He also offered his thoughts on Nixon's legacy with "The H2O Gate Blues," a classic oral narrative. Brian Jackson's capable keyboard, acoustic piano and arranging talents helped make this a first-rate release, one of several the duo issued during the 1970s.

On top of everyone's top-20 list of best albums of the 1970's, this exquisite work by the revolutionary, the poet and the avenging angel of black-power never really acquired the stature it deserved. It sold poorly (despite "Bottle" scratching the bottom of the top-100 charts) and ended up nowhere. Too bad. This masterpiece is right up there with "What's Going On" , "Payback" , "Talking Book" or works by J.B.'s as one of the funkiest and most racially conscious works of the politically charged ‘70s. If you were born in the ‘70s and are clueless about a decade you were born in, just listen to 'H2Ogate Blues', and you shall be explained. As for the musicianship, acid jazz/funk/R&B DOES NOT EVER get any better than this. EVER!!!!. Miss this beauty now and it will be one long Winter in America before you find another copy in the condition as beautiful.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
