The nicest thing you can do for your stylus and your ears. The ultimate record -- the way music was meant to be heard and of superior quality for any Audiophile.
CITY TO CITY was originally released in 1978. “Baker Street” (which held the #1 spot for 6 weeks) was a huge AM radio hit and has recently made a comeback through classic rock radio and its appearance on the “Good Will Hunting” soundtrack. The biggest attractions of the album are the diversity of the tracks and the unmistakable voice of Gerry himself. “Mattie’s Rag” is a salute to old ragtime music and “Whatever’s Written In Your Heart” is a true pure love song.
There’s also some steel guitar mixed throughout just for good measure. As a whole, the album is a great rock statement. “Right Down The Line” was also a hit. CITY TO CITY also has a very clean sound to it -- the recording is exceptional. There’s not too many albums you can that you like ever song but CITY TO CITY delivers.

TRACKS ARE -
1. New Street Blues 2. Didn't I 3. Mr Universe 4. Mary Skeffington 5. The Long Way Round 6. Can I Have My Money Back 7. Sign On The Dotted Line 8. Make You Break You 9. To Each And Every One 10. One Drink Down 11. Don't Count Me Out 12. Half A Chance 13. Where I Belong Rafferty's first solo album, while featuring a stripped back sound compared to his better-known recordings, is positively overproduced compared to his then recent work with Billy Connolly in the Humblebums.
Opening with the instruction to "Do it on the microphone, thank you Gerald" presumably from producer Hugh Murphy, who would still be producing Rafferty albums two decades later, the album kicks off with the rollicking "New Street Blues", with both vocal and arrangement playing against the lyrics - but don't worry, true Rafferty melancholy is to be found in abundance, particularly on "One Drink Down" and "Don't Count Me Out".
Also of note is "Sign on the Dotted Line" co-written with future Stealers Wheel partner Joe Egan, and highly indicative of the music industry-based songs that would dominate "Ferguslie Park" it is too.
These are just a few of the highlights, but as with most Rafferty albums, virtually every track qualifies for that description. Perhaps not the title cut, though, which has the potential to irritate, but doesn't really outstay it's welcome, clocking in at under two minutes - something of a rarity for a Rafferty tune!
Without a doubt this album is worth every cent you'll pay for it.
GERRY RAFFERTY - SOLO LP- GERRY RAFFERTY Gerry Rafferty (1978 US 15-track LP compiling Jerrys contributions to The New Humblebums [1969] and Open The Door [1970] plus his 1972 single B-side So Bad Thinking.
This 1974 transatlantic compilation features all 14 songs that Rafferty wrote with The Humblebums plus the b-side to "Can I Have My Money Back." It was re-released on Visa Records in 1978 after the growing popularity of "City to City" album. Overall, this album sounds very similar to his debut solo album "Can I Have My Money Back" with the late 60s/early 70s folk rock feel to the songs. I would recommend this album to a fan that can appreciate Rafferty's solo debut album, and his work with The Humblebums and Stealers Wheel not just the City to City fanatics.
These tracks were recorded in 1970 while Rafferty was a member of the Humblebums. Not only are these pre-Baker Street, they also were recorded prior to his Stealers Wheel days. Visa Records released the album in 1978 to capitalize on the success of "City To City".
Not nearly as slick as his late seventies work, this album is first rate British folk-rock. Reminiscent of the Kinks' "Village Green Preservation Society", Rafferty's songs reflect life in England through the eyes of a wide-eyed adolescent--Dickens' Pip in rock n roll shoes, if you will. "Rick-Rack", "Steamboat Row" and "Shoeshine Boy" are great British character sketches that recreate a mythical England filled with steam engines, miners, shoeshine stands and afternoon tea.
Rafferty is in great voice throughout and the spare instrumentation (acoustic guitar, piano, understated woodwinds) give the songs a melancholy-bittersweet feel. This is rainy day music, perfect for a wet cold autumn afternoon. Highly recommended to fans of Harry Nilsson, George Harrison and Ray Davies. Better grab this one before it's gone.
