Label/Format: Apple – sides 1 to 4 have the orange coloured format as seen on the first label scan. Sides 5 and 6 have a customised format.

Label Conditions: All the labels shows hardly any spindle marks at all. There are a tiny few small dull spots seen under light on three of them (1, 3, 4). Barely anything at all on 5 and 6. More moderate on side two (which I have scanned), the others far less. The dull spots show little at all with normal viewing and all still look attractive with deep rich colour retained.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderate, this was a popular album and for a box set especially, it sold well. But there is a significant factor here with the copy. It includes a BRITISH-MADE Box AND Poster, the first ‘Printed in Great Britain’ poster I have seen. US-made versions are considered standard by most and true British copies are rare with few even being made. The box depth is much deep and thicker than the US version and the bottom tray is bare grey pale grey, NOT orange – the orange lid is the same for both. The back is textured too with a leather-like finish, the US version is much smoother. This copy included a made-to-measure cardboard insert that bulks out the package to stop movement and lessen the risk of the box getting flattened. This card insert is white one side and plain cardboard colour the other and this also IS included. The records are UK pressed and ALL the matrixes end in -1U, hence first pressings. The giant poster is unmounted, that quite unsual as well and my first one printed here in the UK. British made boxes and poster are rare, make no mistake, these were very short run items before being contracted out to the American manufacturer, probably due to cost and the format totally changed. Now mention must be made of the fragility of the box hinge which was woefully under-strength and inadequate for the job of long-term opening and closing of the lid part. Both UK and US lids used the same fragile thin-tape format for the hinge and few survive intact. This one has I am glad to say HAS, but any winning bidder, please open with utmost care and sparingly, as these sheer off so easily. All the records play beautifully all the inners are fully intact bare one small central bottom edge split on just one – these are equally hard to find like this. Overall, a very fine copy with just the odd small box blemish and all information given below.

Brief Info: Harrison’s 1970 triple album that for me is by far the best post-Beatles album he ever made by some considerable distance. Including material dating back to the mid-Beatles era, there are some real gems included here including the famous ‘My Sweet Lord’. Sides one to four are typical Harrison songs, while the last disc has lengthy jam instrumentals featuring a host of super-star musicians. Most interested people reading this will know all about this album already, I prefer to explain more of what is available and it’s condition – but hasten to add – this is a MUCH rarer near complete UK example. I have never seen UK inner sleeves.

This Album’s Potential for Wear: Very High: these lavish boxed sets are rarely seen devoid of major damage or severe wear. These and similar items are often totally flat with all sides and corners broken or at least creased. As stated above, the ridicuously thin hinge tape rarely survives intact and this is still in one piece with NO repairs. If this does split off, it would be impossible to repair anyway.

What This Set Includes: UK Made Box – 3 EMI pressed Records – 3 US Made Inners – UK Made Unmounted Poster – The Card Inner Box Spacer.

Box Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a grading put into context of compared to many seen – most of which are American. This rare ‘Printed and Made in Great Britain’ original is deeper than US versions and have a non-orange tray interior. This has only mild traces of ageing overall with a little toning mostly seen near the top front edge. This has no sticker marks or tears for which this is well-known to show. The textured bottom tray show little wear with just mild friction marks near the top. The inside areas are all little short of as made (please see the rare GB imprint in close-up). What sets this apart still further is ALL corners are strong, upright and erect with NO repairs, weakening or damage. The same for the actual edges which are unsplit and solidly straight and robust. So this box is totally uncrushed or weakened and totally repair free. One small blemish on the spine: A tiny nick ‘chip’ as seen on my spine close-up, but little else at all with all the gold text intact, present with any fading light and little. Lastly, but never least, the ultra fragle tape hinge is fully intact and still strong, or as strong as they realistically get. But extreme care is needed when opening and closing the lid. Unless perfection is mandatory, this hugely collectable UK original box will please many, if not most collectors and will prove immensely difficult to find much better.

The Inner Sleeve: The three coloured, slightly textured inners are all in at least Excellent to Excellent(++) condition. These are the US-made inners and they were never lined, hence VERY prone to edge splits and I am sure many would have been from new due to movement. Only one edge split on the mauve one, on the bottom which is only small. All others on all are intact with NO repairs. Barely any creasing at all and clean and fresh. All in exceptional condition, few will better these three with even the deeply recessed top openings crisp and neat.

The ‘Stiffener’ Insert: Practically Mint as made with just a couple of tiny and very faint tone spots. An often overlooked part of this British-made set, it is a spacer to help fill out the inside area. As the box is much deeper than the US version, a pad-out insert was included. This is plain cardboard one side and white the other, this has no creasing or dinks.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably better still. UNMOUNTED, yes true, this giant poster has survived the years in lovely condition and has not been wall-mounted. Thus, no pin-holes or cellotape marks or damage of any kind. Unfaded with all the folds strong and folded squarely. Crisp edges and a clean back, just a couple of tiny nick splits on the central vertical fold – one tiny, one almost minusule, but I mentioned what I see. The heavily bearded Harrison looks kinda spooky on this classic poster which is guaranteed UK printed as seen on my close-up picture. The printing plate correction seen obscured to make the ‘British’ new plate. These are rare, unmounted even more so, make no mistake.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: DISC 1: EXCELLENT(+). DISC 2: MINT(-). DISC 3: EXCELLENT(++): just a small surface mark on side two that has NO sound at all. A super visual set that are very clean with genuine lustre and great shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. No doubts, hardly played and offering top sound for all. Any surface traces ultra fine and faint, hardly any even when scrutinised under bright angled light. Visually impressive records, all with -1U matrix endings, they should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All three records play with audiophile sound with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and these are exceptional clean pressings made at a time where quality mattered by a great label. Few copies will even match let alone outperform these early pressings I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these quality records. With an intact Great Britain-made box and an unmounted poster, this set will still prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: This is a lovely set and lovely to have this famed British artist with predominately British packing. An intact box with little wear and only mild ageing, these are truly at a premium. Unmounted UK posters are possibly rarer still and although the inners are American (as per most), they are virtually intact, that also rare. One of the toughest Apple albums to find as such and a giant of an album that many regard as a classic. Do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
