GENTLE GIANT Octopus VERTIGO LARGE SWIRL 1st UK PROG ROCK

Gentle Giant, Octopus.

Original 1972 UK pressed Vertigo Records stereo LP, 6360 080.

Earliest large swirl label issue with gatefold sleeve.

LP is housed in plain sleeve.

Vinyl EX. Spider trail marks around the spindle areas indicates just a few plays, not excessively so. The LP still has glossy surfaces and displays just three or four visible but non-sounding scuff marks and hairlines.

Playback is clean and bright and free of ticks or clicks. In the quieter moments there is just a hint of the very gentlest of low-level crackle. This is very minor and the total duration of this is just a few seconds here and there throughout the entire LP.

Labels are clean and undefaced.

The gatefold sleeve is structurally a solid EX with sharp edges, tips and entry side. The spine is in especially good shape. I've photographed the sleeve in entirety. At first glance it appears to have some ringwear and whitening wear. However on close inspection I believe this is inherent in the design. The main panels do have some miniscule hairline marks which are all but invisible unless inspected very up close. But generally the surfaces appears clean and unworn. Nothing can be felt to the touch and the patching appears to be printed on. I've scanned the internet for other copies of this LP and notice some similarities here. Notably there are copies which have a banding effect to the edges of the front panel. Also the patching appears BENEATH the band's name to front panel, so this is undoubtedly as issued.

In summary then I grade the sleeve as an EX. There are just a couple of minor tan stain marks to the far left and right bottom corners of the inner gatefold (see picture) which appears to be from the same source and caused when the sleeve was closed.

All in all a very nice example of this early Prog Rock classic however.
