GENTLE GIANT 2 x 12" WHITE LABEL ACETATE

GENTLE GIANT 2 x 12" WHITE LABEL ACETATES

Playing the Fool: The Official Live Gentle Giant

CAPITOL SKBB 11592

ON AUCTION HERE WE HAVE A VERY INTERESTING, POSSIBLY UNIQUE (only a handful would have been pressed and it is unknown how many copies have actually survived) 2 x 12” ACETATE TEST PRESSINGS FOR THE US RELEASE OF GENTLE GIANTS EXCELLENT 1977 DOUBLE LP SET “Playing the Fool: The Official Live Gentle Giant”

This live set was released in the wake of a single-disc bootleg of the same name taken off of an FM radio concert and it contains lots of stuff from their early albums. It is beautifully recorded with a vivid and close presence which captures the live atmosphere perfectly. THE OFFICIAL FINAL VINYL RELEASE IS SUPERB ENOUGH IN ITS OWN RIGHT BUT HERE WE HAVE AN ACETATE TEST PRESSING FOR THAT RELEASE

NOTE: An acetate pressing is the transitional stage between the master tape and the finished vinyl record.
It is metal plate covered in a layer of acetone.
Very few are made and they are distributed to people directly involved with the record production in order that they can approve the sound before the final record is cut. They often contain alternative/ different length versions or even completely different tracks to the final official release.
Usually less than a dozen acetates are produced.
They are very thick, very heavy and very cold to the touch

12” ACETATE 1
(final version release titles and times compared to the titles and times [in square brackets] are as they appear on these acetates)

Side 1:
Just The Same 6.08 [JUST THE SAME 11:13]
Proclamation 5.16 [PROCLAMATION ON REFLECTION 6:24]
On Reflection 6.20

Side 2:
Excerpts From Octopus 15.37 [BOYS IN THE BAND 15:35]
Funny Ways 8.29 [FUNNY WAYS 8:35]

12” ACETATE 2 (sides 3 & 4)

Side 1:
The Runaway 3.55 [IN A GLASS HOUSE 9:31]
Experience 5.34 [SO SINCERE 10:22]
So Sincere 10.17

Side 2:
Free Hand 7.40 [FREEHAND 7:40]
Sweet Georgia Brown (Breakdown In Brussells) 1.15 [SWEET GEORGIA BROWN 1:15]
Peel The Paint / I Lost My Head (Medley) 7.35 [PEEL THE PAINT / I LOST MY HAND 7:35]

EACH ACETATE IS HOUSED IN A PLAIN WHITE INNER SLEEVE INSIDE A WHITE THICK CARD OUTER SLEEVE WITH A CAPITOL RECORDS INFORMATION STICKER, DATED 17th NOVEMBER 1977 (see pics)

Both acetates play BEAUTIFULLY. They both have a nice loud cut with stunning audio reproduction. No crackle, minimal ticks and no scratches - even the quieter sections such as the a cappella parts to "On Reflection" display virtually no extraneous noise. Fantastic audio and a real pleasure to listen to.
It’s a great thrill to actually hold a copy (possibly the only one left in existence) that was made for Gentle Giant and the people directly involved in the album production. A real slice of vinyl history and a fascinating insight into the vinyl manufacturing process.

Unfortunately the 2nd side of Acetate 1 has lost a 2cm piece of its coating so rendering the first few minutes of that track unplayable (see pic). The rest of the side plays perfectly. Even though this is a great shame it’s still quite interesting as the metal plate below the coating is now clearly visible!! Acetate 2 is in perfect condition
