Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two ultra light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. You could wait a lifetime to find this record better for looks and sound.

Rarity: Quite rare as a first issue. Finding a copy in this truly STUNNING condition is a really tough ask and all component parts of this copy are amazing. The record, cover, insert and even the inner sleeve are superb and have simply ignored time – and it has to be said, the one and only original owner did so too. This beautifully pressed example – never to be taken lightly on Charisma – has hardly been played and offers master tape quality. So-much-so, I would put this record against any other to compare and I feel few will even exist that will offer a challenge. As per usual, I played this on my very revealing system with the LP12 front-end. I detected just two dull ticks through the whole album and not even a hint of crackle or surface sound. I remind again, this is a Charisma record that many, if not most serious collectors will know were not the most reliable for quiet and issue-free pressings. But this beauty was a delight to hear, and I also remind, this is a difficult and challenging album with many quiet passages. But have no fears, it sounds fantastic. I even question myself for letting this go, but it is what I do – so here it is – the term ‘Museum Quality’ has, for me, seldom applied more. In my 11+ years of Ebay trading, this is up there with the very best albums I have ever offered taking into account of rarity and difficulty. All audiophile collectors, prog-rock connoisseurs and Genesis fans can apply – they hardly get much better than this.

Brief Info: The classic second album from one of the UK’s most famous ever rock bands. Early Genesis played complex, structured music and this is a fantastic album with truly beautiful songs. With quiet passages, this demands a clean pressed and little played copy to glean maximum pleasure. This beautiful vintage original offers just that – maximum pleasure – hardly played and beautifully preserved. I truly cannot imagine a better all-round example. A copy for the serious collector of the early progressive classics.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): and the minus being tiny – I will not grade anything as Mint. An unlaminated gatefold format with a mat, gently textured finish. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the correct B&C credits as seen on my close-up picture. Includes the original lyric insert and plain inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Ultra clean, super fresh and highly attractive. No grubbiness, speckle or marks worthy of mention, this is very impressive. A very faint crease trace near the top when viewed ultra critically under light, but this is almost nit-picking for the sake of it. Few will even get close to this.

Cover Back: Practically as the front with no ring wear or rubbing. Uncreased and again very clean and fresh. Any rim impression is minuscule and any traces of any blemishes or mark traces only seen critically under light. But with a cover this beautiful, who wants to put it under a microscope? Simply enjoy it for what it is, this is as close to factory fresh as they realistically get. Almost hard to believe this is over 42-years-old.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made and looking magnificent. The central graphic is breathtakingly beautiful – I just had to photograph it in close-up and prove how clean it is.

Top Edges: Clearly this delicate cover will have very vulnerable edges. But any hints of rubbing on these two edges are tiny, very few and faint. Both straight with very close to full ink coverage. Stating the obvious: there is NO tipping in on any part of this cover.

Bottom Edges: The odd very small rub trace or two. A little near the right front corner, but still very light indeed. These storage edges again will rarely escape and this has come very close.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely even a hint of any thickening or burring. Both guaranteed untrimmed. The record enters on the back.

Spine and Text: A stunning spine that again is little short of as made. Solid, straight with barely a hint of wear and no compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely and near parallel. All the artwork and text is pristine with no fading or discolouration at all, it has no text matter, just graphic. Both fold hinges are equally immaculate with just a microscopic rub trace near the bottom corner – this going into the realms of mega critical, bordering on stupid. You almost need a magnifier to see it, but there you go.

Corners: Very tiny tip rubs, and I do mean the very tips, not the entire corner. How many covers this pale and age will ever avoid the odd tiny tip rub? All retain better than excellent to near mint shape with no creasing or dinks.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover in near supreme condition, any blemishes barely even register and this sets a bar of near world record proportions. Brave I know, but compared to most I have seen, few have been in the same league. A classic and difficult pale cover that should please most-all collectors. If this one fails to please, it could be a mighty long wait to find one that will.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white, solid unlined inner that has aged little. Minimal crease traces, the odd small darkened manufacture adhesive trace and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: MINT: or as close as they will ever get. Printed one side only but coloured on both. Crisp, fresh and clean with no creasing and all edges razor sharp. Fairly thin paper, so rarely seen like this and often missing altogether.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT (with a micro minus): I have rarely been more tempted to grade a 42-year-old as full Mint than this. Truly, I am struggling to even see a single ultra fine hairline on these two immaculate playing surfaces. Even under my revealing grading light, there is barely a trace or blemish worthy of mention. Only the fact there are a couple of tiny faint spindle traces on the labels gives any clue this one has even been played. A stunning visual copy that is ultra clean with excellent shine, intense black and solidly pressed. Both playing surfaces are practically as made and beautifully pressed by EMI for Charisma. Like the cover and insert, this is a record for the connoisseur.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A reference quality record – one time and the original owner over-looked, few anywhere will match or better this. it offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is of master tape and audiophile quality with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. I can barely even noted any surface sounds – the lack of crackle almost being uncanny on a very revealing system and this has always been a challenging album with several quiet passages and gentle music. An intricate recording and work and not that commercial compared to their later titles. For me, nothing can ever be totally perfect – and two light ticks were heard, one each side – a possible micron-sized fragment in a groove and nothing to do with any mark. As impressive as my VPI cleaning machine is, the odd microscopic fragment can remain but I can see no culprits. Anyway, this is nit-picking, this record is practically impeccable and nothing spoilt the ultimate pleasure in hearing this prog classic this clean. No pressing or cutting noises, this never certain on this label until you have played it. This copy will prove near impossible to find better. Truly a world-class example that merits my highest possible recommendation. Do not even think about losing this one – it will always remain the benchmark copy I will have to judge others by in the future – and being honest, they have little chance.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
